What a day, I took leave today from my job and went North to PA to dig with a friend on a permission my friend has South of Gettysburg, PA. Early in the month I dug my first Block I and was hoping for another Rebel button. My second target at no more than 3 inches down I dig a buckle. After looking at the mud caked tonit and seeing the 2 prongs pointing downward I stared in disbelief as I just dug my first Georgia frame buckle in very good condition; just a little bent . My 3rd target at nearly 6 inches down was a two piece button and when I poured water I knew I had recovered only my 2nd Virginia State seal, but this one is pristine.

My Equinox 800 sniffed out both targets in heavily mineralized northern PA soil. Stuff is out there but you have to take your time and slow down. Happy Hunting !πŸ˜€

Nice pair of CS finds there. I guess there is still stuff to be found around Gettysburg.
Just for the record, here in PA we don't consider south of Gettysburg to be Northern PA soil :laughing7:

Correct me if I'm wrong but most Buckles of this type I have seen do not have an off-set central bar which is a clue to the thicker leather used on horses?

Great relics those will display nice

FYI all this style had an offset metal bar. There are a lot of varieties of these, and some are solid cast, and others have "gutter" backs, i.e., hollowed out. I have a couple in my collection and the book on them.

Disagree, all the ones I've researched do not have an off-set bar,
but I agree they could all be for the same purpose.

WOW what a beauty! Congrats:occasion14:

Nope, you're thinking of a similar "wishbone" style buckle. See "Confederate General Service Accoutrement Plates" by Lon W. Klein, MD. It is out of print, but you should be able to snag one if you don't have one for $300-500.

Pages 146-222. There were a LOT of them. The "wishbone" style with center bars start on page 223.

The button is a great find....but the Georgia frame buckle would probably stop my heart for a few seconds.....huge congrats!--JB
