Worked hard for this button today at a Southern Maine 1700’s cellar hole. Spent a couple hours trying to find and dig good signals amongst all the square nail chatter. Couldn’t believe my eyes after pulling this George Washington inaugural button from the hole.
The first photo was taken as soon as I recovered the button. The second ones are front and back from today after letting it fully dry and lightly brushing off the dirt. The button is slightly bent and the shank is bent but intact. I may not do any further cleaning due to the historic value. Or I will have it conserved by an expert.. I was very lucky as this button is in better condition than any of the hundreds and hundreds of other buttons I have previously dug.
