Gary Drayton , what’s the deal with this guy

I have no qualms with the mate, quit chipper fella, doing what he does, let me ask u in ALL SINCERITY, do you enjoy your job like Gary does, I THINK NOT, but if u choose to lie that’s ok to. I’m jealous I admit. Appreciate it Gary thanks for getting back

Hey brother that’s great, thanks for your service

Gary's been on Josh Gates Expedition Unknown at least twice. They were in England with a dredge and found some things, and in Florida magnet fishing and found some things.
Jon 8-) :cat::occasion14: :headbang:

I like the guy, but it does bug me a little that he never digs his targets.

He always a designated digger with him.....don't they trust him?

I'm pretty Sure the Last time I watched, Which has been few years ago, & IF I Remember correctly,
NO ! they had to get an Archie on Site
to dig, Which is Right up the Producers Alley Anyway.
For every Tin Can they dig, with a Little slight of hand, and camera trickery, they can prove their latest Theory :laughing7:

I did a couple days of detecting with him last year. He is a beast with the 3030.
Very down to earth and a great sense of humor.

Hats off to anyone who can do what he has done.

I watch this show once in awhile BUT he just constantly calls everyone MATE, like every 4th word, and he has some of the other fella's saying it. If I hear MATE one more time I may throw my detector thru the TV screen, well not really, lol.

And I know what MATE means. BUT give it a rest Gary.

His finds and skill speak for themselves. I don't like his earring, or his accent, but I respect his abilities! :skullflag:

I've wondered about this too (yes I watch Curse of Oak Island - though I realize it's TV and not a treasure hunt in the way they have speculated).
I've heard of people having "riders" in their contract. Do you think his rider says he never actually has to dig?

Or do you think it's actually the producers wanting to have a chance to have a second person in every scene? (It might make for boring TV if Gary was off in the woods digging all by himself....)
Unfortunately it gives me the wrong impression of Gary; it makes him look "above" digging and maybe even pompous, which I suspect (from what you've all said) he is not.
And when he was on Josh Gates, I remember that on the magnet fishing episode he was hip deep in that muck recovering some nasty artifact, which tells me that the "designated digger" thing is an Oak Island TV show thing.

I'd like to meet the guy, and it would be awesome to detect with him. He has my son and I saying "bobby dazzler" every time we pull something from the hole, and "top pocket find" too. Those are fun phrases he coined (at least I attribute them to him).

Please keep in mind Gary is a member here so remember rules on attacks on members.

I don't watch the Oak Island show but I do follow him on FB. He is a down to earth guy and answers his followers posts for the most part. For him his hobby is his living so of course he will promote his books and the show while still depicting our hobby in a good light.

By no means am I attacking mr. drayton, I didn’t no he was a member which is insignificant. My point is I’m rather amused by his demeanor on the show, oh by the way I’ve interacted with Gary on YouTube for your information and he was helpful. If anyone on this site reads my many topics I don’t ever consider myself a point of view or subject anyone to mis behavior, I enjoy learning and sharing my experiences and finds, so thankyou verymuch

He is on T.V. right now... just detected a doorknob... a minute ago they showed "some ancient iron"... which made me squint closely to look at how much it resembles the modern flat pry bar that's in my tool chest.

In fact I own 2 of em. heh

'Bobby dazzler' is a now not-very-widely-used term for someone or something considered eye-catchingly attractive or special in some other way (such as how they are dressed) that originated in the mid-1800s in the NE of England. Particularly used among people from the Tyneside area around Newcastle who we refer to as ‘Geordies’, and the term applied in particular to pretty young girls. No-one seems to know for sure where the ‘Bobby’ part came from, except that it was a popular working class name in those days.

Never quite knew the origin of it other than figuring it came from the right side of the pond. Thanks for the history lesson:icon_thumleft:

On the show they keep referring to him as a "Metal Detecting Expert". In my opinion, if they have to keep telling you that he's an expert he probably isn't. He hasn't found anything on that show that is significant.

Good for him on the popularity. Seems like a good guy...someone that would be fun to hunt with. You can't believe all the Hollywood BS they show but don't blame a guy for wanting to be a part of it all.
