A while back I bought some rolls of 1/2 dollars from my bank to try my luck at coin roll hunting. I didn't have any luck on the few rolls I bought, and have been spending them off and on to get rid of them.
During two different times, I found out that today's youth has no idea what these coins even are, which cracked me up. ;D

Last week I stopped at Arby's and my total was $5.45. I gave the kid a $5 bill and a 1/2 dollar coin. Instead of giving me back 5 cents, he gave back .55 cents, because I guess he thought it was a dollar coin. ;D

Last night I took my son to see a movie. I bought my popcorn and soda and gave the kid my money including a 1/2 dollar.
He looks it over puzzled, and then asks me "what kind of money is this?" :o ;D ;D

I think I may go out and buy some more 1/2 dollars or even better yet, the new smaller dollar coins to see what kind of responses I get. ;)

I know ,I got about $300 in rolls and got skunked(some previous hunter had marked all the coins) when spending them I got the same reaction from younger sales help. This winter I might try a box and see what happens. Some people make out great,it'sjust a pain to get rid of em after they are searched.

Can't you trade them back in at a bank for more coins or paper money ? HH

Sure you can. I just like to see these types of coins out in circulation again. ;)

I just started hittin' banks today to get some to search and found halves are not east to find. One bank had 2 $500 bags from a regular customer which I hungered for until the guy says something about he searches them for the 90% silver ones. At another bank the clerk says yes he has two of them and hands me two DOLLAR coins for my paper dollar. One clerk I had to repeat 4 times what I was looking for - don't think she had ever heard of them.

I know what you mean. I had a hard time getting some too. Some banks, like mine, have a box in the vault of oddball coins that they save up until they have enough to send in.
My wife used one of the 1/2 dollars today to pay for her bagel, and again, the cashier had no clue what the coin was. ;D
Man, I must be getting old. ;)

LOL! I used to get rolls of halves for searching when I was a kid--and I spent them at restaurants and stores as well. I like the feeling of plopping down a hefty coin to pay for something--even if it is one or two of them to pay for the change part of the tab. I think these don't circulate because people hoard them, which means that that fewer are in circulation, and hence more folks are apt to hoard them. I agree 100% with you. Let's get those halves circulating!

The local rail system uses the dollar coins in the ticket machines for change. When paying with a handful of Susan B.'s , Sacajaweas, and the various presidential dollar coins, the confusion is high. The foreign born storekeepers are in a state of constant confusion. People see the handful of differing coins all of the same denomination and go scrabbling for an abbacus.

I always buy my tickets with a 20 for some good times.

LMAO!!! ;D ;D ;D

couple weeks ago i got 700.00 in halves from the bank
i ened up with 1 43 walking liberty half and 2 40%
and 4 that were from proof set because they never let them into circulation but some how i found them.

i took a susan b anthony dollar to a fast food restaurant and the kid told me they didnt take foreign money. i almost choked so i told him it was U.S. money & he told me he needed more money because it was a quarter..................
