First, let me say thanks to a great site and apologize for not posting sooner. I ran across this site back in March of this year and finally decided to give it a try. I started on March 9th and have enjoyed the highs and lows of this fantastic hobby. Since I'm a retired disabled veteran, I needed some type of hobby to keep me active. I first started out going to local banks, then extending out to towns within a reasonable drive and finally to box hunting.

I'm currently searching strictly boxes. I can't believe how rapidly this hobby has spread in just the past three months. It's very difficult to go to any town now and not fine it untouched by another CRHer. As you can tell by my post, their are many people who have taken up this hobby and not posted on this site. I personally couldn't sit back any longer and not share my experiences with fellow CRHer's. I also hope I can provide some suggestions to increase your silver totals.

As of right now, I search through 60 boxes per week. I have a system worked out that is working and has resulted in some nice finds. I posted my totals below which has been accumulated since March 9th of this year. I'm looking forward to sharing all of my fines in the future on this site and join in on the topic discussions. I can tell that their are a lot of wonderful people on this site and hope you all will welcome me aboard!!

Hey OR....don't let the negative replies knock you down. There are sour grapes on every vine. You obviously have a system that works for you and a partner to share/assist you with it. Those are good things.

I also have been curious as to what can be accomplished with a large scale search such as yours. You are in a position to do it so my personal opinion (for what it is worth) is go for it. Keep us informed of the results.

One of your replies mentioned "competition". I think he was right about some trying to turn this into competition. It is certainly not a competition by any means. It is like MD'ing, most folks want to share their experience with others whether it is a big hit or skunks. CRH'ing is no different, just an altered way to acquire it. If you have been lurking in here for some time, you noticed people also offer advice to others...like MD'ing. When someone is down....people try to pick him...offer a different tactic...keep him in the game so to speak. Those are good things. That is what I liked about this forum when I first joined. This hobby will definitely have it ups and downs. One of our members says it best....rollercoaster.

I love to read & see pictures of the big hits...like (no names) the find of over 600 Franklin's......another find out over 600 silver halves......full rolls of Walker's & Franklin's......rolls full of 64's.....silver dollars.....one member even pulled a Silver Eagle. Those stories are exciting to hear about. I hope to read and see pictures of some of your hits as well. I think alot of us would.

I guess I have said enough....maybe too much coffee this morning...ha! Anyway, keep posting and let us know the results of your large scale operation.

Good luck.

Hey Oldred-
First of all, thanks for starting this post- it's fascinating to hear about it and I for one do believe that it can be done, especially if you have two people working full time at it.
I do have a question though- if I started moving around the amount of money you do- like 10k and 20k a week per bank, I would be afraid of being reported to the government for money laundering or suspicious activity and generating some unwelcome attention. Has that happened? Or, have you successfully convinced your banks that you are legitimate?

Oldred, you and your bride are inspiring!!! My son and I just started (last month for me.).. Since I have times I can't walk very well, it gives me something to look forward to.. So far so good!!
Jr, (rayzhell) and I Have some fun and make a little profit.. Still trying to find dump banks that will take halves has proven to be difficult.. Still working on it.. And please any info you can contribute will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!
Hoping we all find a box of 90%'ers!!
Ray

All of the banks I deal with know me very well (first name basis) and know that I'm legitimate. When you deal in this amount of CRHing, you can expect all kinds of questions. I show a lot of my finds with the tellers like the proofs, uncirculated dates, foreign coins and the newer comms.. It's no secret anymore around my part of the state that people search half's for silver. I don't go out of my way telling any teller that I'm searching for silver. I just state that I'm a collector and search for specific dates and error coins which is all true. I let them know that I'm retired and this hobby is something me and the wife share together. The banks and I have a great relationship with actually tellers looking forward to seeing me each week. I bring them treats often (even the Bank Manager) and this definitely helps when you are ordering a large some of half's or dumping thousands of half's at their bank. It is most banks policy for tellers to not accept any gifts for obvious reasons, but so far I have only one bank out of many that I can't give some token gifts to the tellers and Bank Manager.

LJ,

I mainly operate on a large scale, because silver is getting more difficult to fine by ordering just one or two boxes. I started out this way but quickly realized that if I wanted to fine enough silver to make this profitable, I would have to go through many boxes per week.

Even though I enjoy this hobby greatly, there are some real ups and downs each batch (20 boxes) I search. My worse batch is only 27 silver half's. My best batch is 515 silver half's. I've established a realistic goal per batch (100) and anything over this total makes up for the batches where I don't reach my goal. If I reach my goal each week, I will have 300 silver halfs for the week by searching 60 boxes and 1200 for the month. So far I'm above my goals (knock on wood). As you can see, I'm playing the numbers game, and hopefully this strategy will continue to produce for me.

I'm happy that you are finding large amounts of silver in your boxes especially your magic date boxes of 11/06. Love reading your posts and sharing in your success and enjoyment of this hobby. Sometimes you fine more in one box than I do in 20. Keep hitting it hard, because one day, it probably will be slimmer pickings, but we hope not.

I'll post my picks for each batch I go through so people can see the roller coaster I go through each week and also share in the excitement of this wonderful hobby we all enjoy.

With the number of guests that read all of our posts here, there is probably a whole lot more CRHers than we know of. There has been a whole lot of silver plucked out of circulation that we have seen and posted on this forum alone, makes you wonder how much more is being pulled out and not shared by the "mystery guests" who view this forum alone, plus all the other CRHers out there. If silver were to drastically jump up in price, I imagine there might be another melt.

Welcome. Sorry I doubted your story at first. Good luck hunting. I deleted all of my offensive posts from this thread. Hopefully we can get a new start.

Oldred, what was the most unusual find that you've made in a box of halves if you don't mind me asking?
I guess he minds me asking :-\

I'm sorry that I missed your question, it sure wasn't intentional. Probably the most unusual fine was a 1907 Barber half. It's also my oldest fine so far. What about your best fine so far? I love hearing what people fine in their search!
