Hi;

Just happened to be preserving some pewter flat buttons I dug over the weekend, and added this rotten flat button to the Elmer's glue mix to stabilize it. Dug this button out of a cane field in Louisiana quite a while back but never could get an ID from it since it was in such bad shape. Seems the Elmer's glue helped bring some detail out as I can now see FRANCAISE along one side. Nothing on the back left other than a mark where the loop had been attached.

Again tough shape as the silt and mud of Louisiana is tough on relics. My hats off to the diggers there as it's like digging in peanut butter/fudge sometimes only to end up with a ?.

Anyone recognize what I have here?

Great save! I found this neat book of French uniform buttons online. Toward the end there are buttons in this section that look to have the same design as yours. But I think it translates to them being of gold or silver.

There are lots of buttons pictured though so I may have missed others that fit. But I think it is circa 1790s French 1st Republic.

It says "doré" which means gold-plated. That's what it could be. It then says "argent" but does not mention whether it is also plated or not for silver. (should be "argenté" or "plaqué argent")

Le Fallou is a great button book indeed !!!

Bramblefind: Thanks for the input and the comprehensive button book link. I always welcome another reference and thank you for sharing, playing detective, and solving.

T: The button does have some particles of gilt (dore) in the pillar like item held in the figures right hand; I'm sure the button was gilt (dore) before time and soil took their toll. Thank you for your sharp eyes.

Attached are two items that were found in the same area as the French button. Not sure if they are connected or coincidental but I welcome any input.
