Although the ball joint probably makes more sense, after seeing the other pics, I'm still leaning toward the medical side. I wonder if it could be a 'mammy made' apothecary spoon? Below is a pic of one made from a Morgan silver dollar. :dontknow: Breezie

Don't want to hijack the thread but that Morgan Dollar spoon is just so cool. Thanks for posting that Breezie.

Back in the 60's I worked in a copper and brass foundry as a furnace operator. My job was to shovel scrap metals into a furnace where it was melted down and then poured into slab molds then it went to the rolling mill where it was rolled into sheets. The furnace held 4000 pounds of metal. When the metal reached pouring temperature, I would dip a ladle into the furnace to retrieve a sample that was poured into a small sample mold. When the ladle was empty, there would always be a crust of solid medal left in the ladle. I would swing and pound the ladle on the floor several times to knock it out. This left the ladle looking dimpled just like the ladle found in this post. The shape and design of the pictured ladle is exactly like what I used except mine was probably 3 times as big. I believe that this ladle was used in the same manner but on a smaller scale. The person that suggested it was used for pouring lead IMO probably has it right.

Looking at the close-up picture with the half dollar, it looks like there's still some slag in it.
