I never noticed Kuger but it doesn't go through. also the little glob in there is metal. I dug around and the hole goes pretty deep.

I am wondering if it is some kind of ladle?A metal rod inside of a wood handle maybe?Possibly a lead ladle?

ToT, It looks like the mortar from a mortar and pestle, probably used for mixing medicine or herbs since it is so small. The hole in the end could have held some type of handle. And like you said, it looks old as dirt! Super find, Breezie

I agree.

Breezie, I think it is too small for a mortar/pestle.

Although the ball joint probably makes more sense, after seeing the other pics, I'm still leaning toward the medical side. I wonder if it could be a 'mammy made' apothecary spoon? Below is a pic of one made from a Morgan silver dollar. :dontknow: Breezie

Yep, it does make sense that it is a ball joint. Something else that it reminds me of are the 'air scoop' thingies on a weathervane, but I don't know if they were made of iron. At any rate, it's still a cool find, Breezie

:laughing7: not to me because the shaft would of been to weak to turn anything bigger than an empty radio flyer.

Oh, ToT, I'm glad you called my attention to that; I mis-read it. thanks, Breezie

The inside of the bowl would be smooth if t were part of a ball joint

Do a little electrolysis on it and see what emerges. (is that a word? doesn't look right...)
