Agreed some kind of ratchet gear. That was either seized on & somebody tried to take it off with a pipe wrench or it got hot & started melting. :icon_scratch: Otherwise if the ratchet part had gave way then the striped look would had been going the other way instead of twisting the way it did.Much like this hand winch gear.
Take Care,
Pete, :hello:

World, I agree with the rest of the group and if it's not a stripped bushing, washer, gear, or the likes, what do you think it is?

Just because you found a 1723 coin in the same place, does not mean it has to be old. I found a 1950's lipstick tube in the same hole as a Civil War 3-Ring Minie bullet. Land can go through all sorts of changes, and dirt is moved around from plowing, weather, etc.

And I'm sure the 'boys who have nuf smarts among us to figger this un out' thinks its a washer, bushing, or a gear, more than likely it is what they think it is. ;D

Interesting find, Breezie

I was a Machine Repair Tech. at Pratt&Whitney Aircraft for 27 years, worked on every Machine they had both old and new.It is definately NOT a gear or washer,my first guess was a frame for something. Thanks Breezie,God Bless,Chris

Chris,I'm sure after 27 yrs. you've seen a cazillon gears and washers, and I certainly have not, so like Pete, what do I know either. :dontknow: Do you see a place on the back where there was an attachment as for a brooch or frame prop?

I would most likely say a stripped gear of some sort. Even if it is contemporary with the coin, it's nothing really special, just a go with.
I've literally found 1700s coins in the same hole as modern lightbulb bases. When people look for areas to settle, the most obvious choice is land that had been previously cleared, so these homesites and fields get reused over the years. It does make you wonder with some of these bits, exactly what they were used for.

Timekiller,If you will look closely,I.D. and O.D. are NOT concentric with one another, and the so called teeth have been CUT in and are NOT equally spaced.NO I did not work on Engines,I repaired the Machinery{working within .000050 of an inch}That's 50 MILLIONTHS!A frame was a passing thought.

in your time as a person who repaired Machinery surely you have seen stripped torn up gears....some will not have any teeth at all....just saying. You have us at a disadvantage as you can touch, hold, spin the item in your hand...we are looking only at a picture.
Brother,I said that to myself, they only have a pic.I recon i see my share of stripped gears that's fur sure!

with a picture of what happens when two gears git out of mesh or a broken one goes around another one...is there anyway the one you have in your hand....could have sustained enough damage to make it look like that? I've seen some so bad they look melted.
This piece is bronze, very hard and it has DEFINATLEY been cast.

How can it be a Striped Gear or a Washer :icon_scratch: it only has on flat side, and it would have been the worse one, of those two ever made ::)
Was there something attached to the back, and is that a notch on the front :icon_scratch:
