So I was exploring an area where there apparently used to be a covered bridge. Lo and behold, I stumbled upon this site. The odd thing is that there is a concrete slab atop it while the bricks are clearly made of clay. It seems as if someone had tried to cover this opening at some point. Anyone have an idea what it might have been? I'm thinking an old cellar or underground chamber of some sort. Thanks!

Looks like a structure used to control and clarify spring water, perhaps for the travelers on the now-obliterated bridge road. I would dig it down and try to find old bottles that may have been tossed in there before it got filled with sediment.

I thought it looked like something to do with a spring also. My grandfather built a springhouse that was kinda similar.

Not sure what they are, I saw an almost identical structure on some land granted to the Native Americans
forever in 18th C. Ma. the site is still used occasionally by the tribe, there are shelters and what looks like a sweat lodge.

It could be an old well, so be careful; take a rope and a friend. Neat find, Breezie

Not ancient, at least in North America, especially considering that it appears to have a poured concrete top.
