Went out last night into the front yard for the heck of it and dug my first indian head! Only about 2.5" down. And my oldest coin so far.

After some cleaning it's either a 1866 or 1865. I put it under my usb microscope and it looks like a 1866 but I'm still not 100%

Can it be cleaned anymore than this? I used the boiling peroxide method about 8 times.

Congrats on your first, and an old one at that!

Nice find, congrats!

Great Indian cent. Congrats on your first. Now, onto silver with matching dates! Good luck

Congrats on your first Indian. I dont use the peroxide method on mine. I just water them off, lightly go over it with a toothbrush, & soak in olive oil for a week or so.

Awesome find. I remember where I dug my 1st one. It was at a defunct trailer court in 2014. Your's is in way better shape then mine was. I never get tired of seeing them in the hole.

One of my favorite coins. Congrats on your first!

I use a brass brush (sparingly) on mine... if they are already chewed up. Don't tell anyone I said that.

Cnogratz on your first IHP and oldest coin!

Great first IH & oldest coin!
Congrats!

Did you recognize it right away?
It took me several minutes to figure out what mine was. Lol!

That's really old for Iowa. I'm in Minnesota and was thrilled w a 1870 Indian that was messed up. Congrats.

Like everyone else, I can remember my first IH! I thought, "man, what's next!?" Keep swinging, and you will soon find out! Best of luck to you.

congrats ! I can remember my first one too, keep hunting and you will find things you never imagined enjoy the ih

I had no clue what it was but I knew it was a coin. So I hurried to the garage and put it under a light and could barely make out the "one cent" on the back so I knew it was either a wheatie or a IHP.

Then after cleaning the first time I could see the feathers and knew what it was.

I was really fired up after I seen the date!!!

I will try the olive oil and see how that works. Thanks!

And thanks to you all for your replies!

Me too! The feathers identified it.

Nice coin, but I thought you had found an International Harvester Pickup (IHP). :laughing7:
