Got out this morning before the sun came up. Went to a small woods lot where I've found a few coins in the past. Got an iffy signal at 5 inches and pulled this 5 dollar gold piece out. Searched for 2 more hours and no more coins. It was getting hot by then so headed home a very happy man.

because "normal damage" doesnt cause bumps. I have no idea why SOME people have such a hard time with comprehension.
But fire damage does cause bumps, is that normal? Is to me.

It makes me happy to see such a coin found by a consistently class act. Big congrats!

Awesome find.
That's the holy grail of metal detecting in my book. Big congrats on that one.Too bad there weren't more but still fantastic.

There may be more I just haven't found them yet. At least that's what keeps me looking. I love this hobby.

I have to agree but only because I have seen it first hand with many silver and a few gold coins I have found.

However for someone who does not know or has not ever seen it then a simple google search will show it.

Still to me it is a banner find all the way, and I am not going to belittle the amazing find with speculation of counterfeit when the evidence leans far more towards fire. But even if it where counterfeit, a gold coin found at that weight is still pretty cool.

The fire damage to me adds to that history. But clearly for some one mans treasure is another mans trash.

Yes, thanks for agreeing, I did say that it looks like fire damage.

I never said the damage was a "bad" thing. Is a truly rare event for one of us to dig a rare coin in pristine condition. When it comes out with cuts, scratches, inscriptions, drawings, and other forms a damage, its a testament to the coins age, use and history.

My vote has been in for banner and if the coin turned out to be counterfeit it still would go in. How often do counterfeit gold coins get found? I think it would be much harder finding a counterfeit over the real deal any day.
Glad it is the real deal and super happy for you trapperart!! Still BANNER either way and a find of a lifetime...
CONGRATS MAN!!

Thanks to everyone who voted for this post, hope you all enjoyed sharing it with me. Good luck to all. Art

Funny thing about all this is IF it is a counterfeit it is even rarer than a genuine gold coin. Great find and a banner either way.

Looks like you got the well deserved Banner nod....Congrats Art, you done good!

From one Marylander to another, way to go!! :occasion14: You give me inspiration that I will finally find some interesting old coins.
