Hi everyone. I dug this beautiful cob yesterday. My first one! Can you say excited:) Anyway it weighs 1.1 grams and I took several pictures because I don't know which way it is supposed to face:) If anyone can give me an idea of what it is or how old I would appreciate it. Thanks Goldirocks

WTG gal!!! A cob find in NJ is about as hard to find as a NJ copper in Virginia. Just not many found here, mainly since the cobs seemed to be mainly used in the Tobacco Colonies. :) Now that you and Artie have found one, I guess Jim will be next, I hope so. So nice to see being found this far north.
I cannot help you in the ID, way out of my realm of knowledge....

Don

Looks like a 1/2 real cob.
To properly align, the 'castles' would be in the top left or bottom right of the pics. 'Monogrammed' coin, like yours were made in Mexico during the terms of Felipe II, III and IV; and Carlos II. Better eyes than mine can discern which monarch applies here.
Don....

Thanks Don and Don. Yes I do hope that Jim finds one too! I tell you these fields have given up so many different and awesome things. It boggles the mind! Now all Jim has to do it think he will find one and his wish may come true:) Thanks for trying to figure out how old this cobb is. I am going to have to do some research myself:)

Thanks Don. You seem as excited as I am:) Will email you soon. Have a question about something I found.

I would have like to have seen your face of excitement. I know the feeling. I've found two over the years. One in Jupiter with Big Gary & one in treasure coast with TJ. Those were the days. I'm very happy for you both. I'm at a lost to help on this one. Go back to your fields of dreams young lady. Cya

Hey Stranger how are you! Yeah its kind of weird to see me do so much field detecting when the sand and surf beckons me! I wish we could meet up again for another hunt somewhere. Hope you are well and finding your share.

Nice find and congrats! It appears that it may be from Carlos II's reign but was probably originally a 2 or 4 Reale piece that has been snipped in use as payment.

may i ask you what beach you found this gem

You got the pictures aligned correctly, conveniently, with the bottom two. Half real, Lima mint, Philip V monogram... "74_" visible below the cross, denoting a date between 1740 and 1746/47 (whichever was Philip's last date, I forget which).

Great find. I found a 1534 cob a couple of weeks Ago in St. John's Newfoundland. I was lucky enough to have a date on it I will post pic. It was a 1 reale

No such animal exists... dating started on the peninsular Spain pieces in 1588, and in the early 1600s at the New World mints. No point speculating what it may be without a pic.

I was told it was a cob. It's dated 1534

It IS a cob (1700s Potosi 1 Real, possibly clipped), but whoever came up with that date was just guessing based on what they were seeing those digits as. Looks to be a "7 _ 4" date between the pillars... so "17_4".

NOTE: Rotate your cross side pic 90 deg. for correct alignment.

No question on the date clearly 1534

Sorry, Olderdabetter. RW is right. Since you are new to the site, here is some background. RW is the real deal. He has spent entirely too much spare time studying Spanish cob coinage. (I mean that as the highest compliment, RW.) When he offers up an opinion, it is best to pull up a chair because class is in session. He is an asset to the cob collecting community.
