Matt had a great find today, I'll let him tell you................

Well not exactly a MDing find but anyway,I was at a park on Sunday looking for bottles and i was finding coins on the edge of the creek. So when i got home i was cleaning the money i saw somthing that looked nothing like a jefferson. I cleaned it some more and then i saw a shield!!!!. HOLY CRAP!!!I looked at the date 1881!!! It is worth $250 in G-4!!!By far the most valuable coin i'v found so far!!!! I am still shocked. But how did it get there, it was just there on the surface ,not even any dirt over it. Is there a way to get the green crud off of it???? THANKS MATT

I don't know whether to congratulate you or pass out from shock..if you're in total denial, we understand!

Congrats!

Matt looks forward to the replies. I'm working with him to get used to the social aspect of the posts. I'll take the liberty of answering some of the questions. Right now the coin is soaking in olive oil. Matt found the coin a few days after the creek(crick) overflowed it's banks. He's really into old bottles now, and was looking for bottles along the creek edge, when he saw the coin. He has a good eye. Even though I know nothing about coins, I'm more excited about the find than he is. Just thinking how the coin got there has me intrigued. We'll get more pics up after we clean it up a little.

thanks,
Al

That is a great find. Could you repost it after you clean it up? Would like to see what is under all the dirt and grime.

You should definately go back there WITH you metal detector. ;D

Sweet! Gotta love finding coins when digging for bottles. Nice find ;D

very nice find! i am still looking for my first!

:o
I can't believe it! It's been a while sinse I read posts (just catching up on the last few days)- and had asked a question about what I thought was a copper coin I'd found. Worn so thin, all I could make out was the five and what looked like dots surrounding it. The other side was completely lost. Wafer thin, she was. I got a reply suggesting I check a coin site- which I did. I actually found a sheild nickel! Of course, mine has purely sentimental value for obvious reasons, but YOU! You get the big KAHUNA! Way to go, pal! HH ;D
