A iron C.S snake ! I am hoping this is a "BANNER FIND " as from what I understand these are rare to find due to the fact they are iron ... The day started with a bumpy start first place I knocked at was a 1850 house , and the owner told me that after 15 years of various people detecting no one has ever found anything other than nails ,hummmm so he said he wasnt interested in anymore detectorist hitting his yard so I thanked him for his time and moved on . I ended up hitting a old trusty spot around the corner .

When I rolled out of my truck the thermo said 96 but on that hillside it felt like 110 ... but after a nice 3 hour hunt I ended up scoring 5 .57 cal three ringers and 1 williams cleaner and a awesome SNAKE HEAD .

I hit the same place a few weeks back with the garrett at and only scored 2 c.w bullets so this time I broke out the ole XLT and man did she shine in that dirt .....

Also attached are some pics of my finds from last Saturday when me and Deadheaddigger hooked up , up his way which ended up scoring a nice pistol shot a couple of round balls ,some fired rounds, and a couple of nice flat buttons and really cool knife pommel and a silver O .... Thanks for looking !

As we have lively debates about the dating of the brass snake buckles, I'm interested to see what the CW Buckle guys think about this iron version. Its the first I've seen.

How do you know that it is iron ? I have seen plenty of none ferrous items with crud build up like that...this will be interesting anyway :icon_thumright:

Interesting finds. Were those snake buckles military?

I used some naval jelly on it first before its bath and a lite scrub with a soft wire brush , I am pleased with the out come ... and feel very lucky to have found it and saved it ...

Yes mostly confederate , and mostly brass .The iron ones are pretty rare to find ,and from my understanding there were a few union ones .

Thanks Quindy and everybody for the kind comments ... I guess back to sergeant rikers for another single display box ! I am very proud to have that one hanging on the wall in the relic room !

That will make a great addition to your growing collection Bud and needing to buy another relic box is a super problem to have. HH, Quindy.

There were none made for Confederate or Union, and there are an infinate number of styles many that pre date the C.W. by quite a bit. They arent "common",but they are not real uncommon either. Most if not all were of British Origin though, and the Confederacy did seem to have more of them then did the Union Forces.I know of quite a few dug far,far away from any military action, let alone C.W. action. Nice find!!

Great find.. judging by your photo it looks like you were over towards the Potomac River? always great stuff to find along the river. I hunt all up and down the potomac river. Great recoveries.

Thanks for the information on origin of the snake buckles . When I researched iron snake buckles on well known civil war relic dealer sites , the iron ones from my understanding are rare to find however the brass ones are fairly common to find . And yes many did pre date the civil war . But she is going to look good in the relic room .
