Got to go out for a little while tonight and found this head 8 inches down! I have No idea who it is but I can tell you a Civil War Era Cemetery is very close to where I found this, and before anyone says anything I was in a local park where kids were playing basketball and skateboarding. I think this probably washed down the hill from the Cemetery as the Cemetery Has been vandalized many times in the past. There is a cemetery currator and I will be calling them in the next day or so to see if someone lost their head, pardon the pun.

Before then anyone have any ideas besides I am doomed for all time???

At least you have a head start in finding out who this is.... It looks very old to me, and if the curator does not know about it, then that is very strange....

Maybe you have come across a old site that no-one even knew existed.... keep looking, maybe you will find the body ;D

Topic was locked at author's Request

And is Unlocked at his request also.
because members requested it of him.

He does NOT want off color Remarks,
& this is his Right.

The First off color remark, how ever Slight,
I will re-lock it & their won't be a Reprieve.

No I am sure they weren't. But some people objected to them and they really caused me a headache (ha ha ha)

bigcypresshunter,

Check out the lips and eyes. Here is a closer comparison of the two. I believe they are one and the same. What do you think?

I think they look amazingly similar side by side. I thought his nose was too big also but the resemblence is quite close as you have shown it.

I found pictures of him a little younger and his nose doesn't seem to be as big in them. I still don't know. We have another priest who wants to look at it so I will let you know. But you know what? It may just be ABE!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

Went back and searched the area again tonight, the ground was way too dry to dig much. Did not find any more of the statue. I will go back after a good rain and check again.

Thanks for reading my post.

Could be the head off a NAMBLA trophy. I'm sorry couldn't help it.

At first glance I thought it was FDR. But I doubt he wore a skull cap.

Maybe he is Jewish? Were any Jews buried in that cemetery?

Sorry to maybe take you down another path. You should have left this topic closed, you should have quit while you were...

I didn't restart this post and anyone who is too immature to post on this in a grown up form should be ashamed of themselves. Besides I already posted that it has been ID'd as Pope Leo XIII by two local priests.

Not sure who it is or what the head wear is properly termed but i was thinking maybe the cross on the said head gear can date the clergyman in question. just a shot in the dark

good luck with the ID

Cool find, ME!

I think you have a match with Pope Leo XIII.

I'm curious though, I don't think I saw this mentioned in previous posts. How big is the cemetery on the hill? Would it be possible to walk through to see what stone or marker the head came from? Are there other heads on markers there?

In any event, a very unique find.

Thanks for sharing.

The Cemetery is only open during select hours. I believe that there are approx 6,000 graves with 1,600-1,700 being Civil War Soldiers, this information was according to a local who knows a lot about the cemetery. I took this to the curator of the Cemetery and he said he has never seen anything like this in the cemetery or anything this may have come off of. We were hunting in a Public park down a hill from the Cemetery. I am one of those people that will NEVER hunt inside of a Cemetery. I actually hunted inside one, once to try and help a family member find a lost item they had dropped and even though it was right on top of the ground I still felt weird and will NEVER do that again.

Has a great shot of the cemetery.

Thanks for the reply ME.

Interesting link too. That cemetery looks very old.

Searching that cemetery (sans detector of course) for the origin of the head would certainly be a huge task .

mastereagle, I believe that you have indeed ID'ed the item as stated. Just curious as to the break point, does it look to be a cut or a break? sometimes I have seen catholic parrishioners leave tokens, statues, other momentos laying on or near loved ones graves...........in that vein of thought, one opyion might be of a gardner hitting it with a mower and sending the head flying down the hill to where you found it?

Just a thought......
