Found this big coin near the river today and got it cleaned up just enough to identify it. I was just wonderin', what was a coin like this worth back then? Did they just say, "That'll be 2 Coppers."?

It looks like someone tapped on it with their bayonet or knife. There was some fightin' that took place nearby, c.1814.

Thanks, Old Dude! Actually, I know exactly who lived at that home site in the latter 1700's. The family had a rich history in these parts. I found a little toy soldier nearby, but I don't know if it's old enough to have come from the same family.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if every find we make came with a little insight as to the life of the person that lost it? If that coin could talk........Congrats on a super dig. Thank you so much for sharing with us. We all learn from other's finds and the posts that accompany them.

I think you're right Iron Patch. One great way to attribute the 85's is the branch hand and leaves if you have the detail. What does the hand point to and how are the leaves cut? Some are easy to spot like the 1-E and the 7.1-D, 7.2-D and 8-D, others not so easy.

Nice find man, I'd freak if I found one that old! Congrats!!
