Hi folks I thought you might enjoy a little video I made of the Etrac detecting a 10" and 8" Mercury dime.
I don't know how I got lucky enough to get them on video but I did. I would have recorded all 5 that I dug yesterday but the other signals were a bit more iffy so I decided not to take a chance of wasting my memory card OH WELL!!
This is my first real attempt to put some time into making a video where I actually played with some effects and stuff
let me know what you think.

OUTSTANDING!!! 5 Mercury Dimes in a two hour hunt on a site that has been hammered, I must say you are one of the Top detectorist going today. About the time I think the Old Fairgrounds is hunted out you manage to bring it back to life. I know what you mean about the gravel there at the fairgrounds. I've nearly sprained my wrist and ankle diging there. Good video too Brother. I felt like I was there!

Attention: In John's defense he is a pro all the way. He knows the detectorist's code of ethics like the back of his hand. We've detected together hundreds of times and I can tell you first hand John is not only a perfectionist but an artist when it comes to retrieving targets while leaving the ground looking natural once the target it retrieved. He doesn't get in a hurry. He also hauls off any junk he digs, and gathers up any surface trash that he comes across while detecting.

John is an inspiration and a great role model in the areas of preservation, and promotion of our wonderful hobby of metal detecting.

P.S. Yes, I am his brother, still, the truth is the truth! He is always welcomed back by the property owners. Bravo Bro!

Thanks Kirk, your not to shabby yourself. I guess every now and again we all have to give each other a big pat on the back. That is what it's all about. :occasion14:

John,

Thanks for spending all your time and effort into videotaping yourself. I enjoyed the video...it really reminds me of all the videos my buddy and I did back in '07 and '08 of digging deep silver. The big difference between your vid and ours is that the camerman and the md'er were the same in yours, while my buddy was the cameraman and I was the md'er. When someone is videotaping you, you can make a much smoother, less jittery, and thorough (from signal to dig to target recovery) without interruption. I don't think I would ever make a vid on my own. Too difficult...I need both my hands for digging in the turf. I commend you for being the cameraman and the detectorist!!

With that said, you did very well finding 5 mercs and just 1 wheatie. If I had that kind of silver to wheat ratio for the whole year, I'd have over 1000 silvers. ;D

Thanks Dan,
I appreciate your kind words. I agree it is very difficult to locate, and retrieve a deep target and do everything just right while videoing yourself. Kinda like patting yourself on the head and rubbing you stomach at the same time if you know what I mean, LOL.
In this area the wheats are there but the digging is so difficult that I try to avoid them while cherry picking the silver, that is my explanation for the silver to wheat ratio.
I have watched some of your videos and enjoyed them immensely. I think it is a generous practice that you, your friend, myself and others portray in these videos to try and share with other less experienced detectorist the " how to's " of finding the deep old targets ( what they sound like and how they react ). It's people like yourself that are an inspiration to this hobby.

Thanks again,
John

Thanks, John. Appreciate that very much!!

As for cherry picking the silver tones in your fairground area.....The digging looks real difficult, but I know for a fact that some of those wheatie signals actually turn out to be silver too....it's happened many times to me...thin/worn barbers and mercs can sound just like an ordinary wheatie/copper memorial. I know many of the Indian head pennies and teens-twenties wheaties hit in the zinc penny range, but the later wheaties(40's-50's) can sound like silver too. I would be wary of those wheatie signals, and start digging them when your real high "squeak" signals become less and less.

John, it was a great video except for you taking way too big of a plug with the shovel. Please do not take a shovel of any kind into a grassy park or we will all be looking for another hobby. I would be kicked out of most of my spots with anything but a hand trowel. R.L.

Very Nice... I'll get my first Silver this year... Nice Video.. check Out mine. It's Indianheads.

Enjoy!!

I think it was fantastic first edited video, John! I don't know how in the world you managed to tote all that equipment around and find the goodies too! :D No worries about your digging skills~

Awesome hunt!~

Very cool! Thanks for filming and sharing!!!

Awesome finds. I do have one word of caution though. Please be careful using a shovel like that in park grounds. We all need to remember what image we are giving when we go to public places like these and start digging large holes with shovels like that. I don't mean to be a downer but I just want to make sure that our hobby lasts.
Thanks and HH,
Frank

I agree totally. It a great video and it is also sending the message that it is OK to dig big old hold in public properties without proper filling in. Which it is NOT.
:o :o :o nice finds-n- vid dont let anyone on here bug u to much on your digging stye. Most of them would give up after 2 or 3 inches while using a digging trowel then they would just simply kick the dirt over the hole then stomp on it a few times.during there frenzy attack..

I also don't want to be mean but we need to be careful to preserve the hobby.

Happy Hunting

Thanks Dan,
I have been fooled by alot of wheats sounding like silver. I will usually dig those deep lower tones that sound like old teens wheats or indians and have been suprised by a few thin barbers that will fall into those same tones. As for the newer wheats I'm sure as the silver tones lessen the more wheats I'll be digging.

Ever tried to dig an 8" or 10" coin in hard ground without a big plug. I pity those poor little scratched up coins. :nono:

Thanks skullhunter.va, Sounds like you have also seen the guys with thier little hand trowel picking out little clumps of dirt at a time and make more mess than a backhoe digging. To dig a large plug with a small shovel, recover a deep target, then backfill your hole neatly takes many years of practice. I don't recommend this method for the novice.

nice video and finds. i know you cover your holes like you suppose to.

john i think you did a great job with your vid. i couldnt imagine trying i dont know how yet. i found 5 mercs in about 1/2 hour ounce as a matter of fact i went back to that site today to give it a try and didnt even get a wisper of a signal but 4 other people were with me that day and im sure they went back and hit it hard. oh well just goes to show certtain things should be kept to yourself. big congrats willy.

Great video and finds John. Thats what I love about my new E-trac. 8-10" coins sound like ones at 3-5". It has totally changed the way I think about having to detect. So many of the sites around my local that the old timers say are hunted out are now like virgin ground again when you are hitting the targets they couldn't reach!! My old six inch long stainless digger tool just don't cut it anymore. HH

Very nice finds, John. The E-trac is impressive. Do you like it better for coinshooting than your F75?

Thanks for taking the time to put the nice video together for us!!
I prefer digging CW relics but hey it's nice to get out at dimes and try and dig some old silver. I will make more videos it is nice to be able to go back and sorta re-live a successful hunt. I thank you sir.

Thanks Willy,
5 mercs in a half hour is getting with it my friend, that is what " Metal Detecting Memories" ( kinda sounds like a song title hmmm.) are made of. Thats sucks about the guys going back and cleaning it out. Oh well lessons learned.

Have a good `un

The Etrac is an amazing machine isn't it. Kinda makes the old hand digger obsolete.
I have found more silver since I got my Etrac last October than I found in the previous 3 years combined. Gotta love that.

I prefer the Etrac BUT I have 400-500 hrs logged on it, where with the F75 I have only used it for a couple weeks. I've had several successful hunts with the F75 and I can say that so far it shines in vast open fields hunting civil war relics because of its speed and ability to find the tiniest targets. I have had one good day where I hunted a couple hours at this fairgrounds site and managed to find 9 deep older coins with the F75 but my inexperience caused me to miss these 5 dimes that I found with the Etrac.
I don't feel I can make an accurate assessment of the F75 until I have some more time logged on it.

Hey JOHN! do me a favor and post that video on Minelabownerstv.com ok? and share those settings with everyone. Well done! And could you pm those settings to me? You had said in the video you were in manual mode @ 30? Maxed! Multi or two tone? Interesting.....Mike as far as the post above me.....he paid his dues....the only rules here are to respect each other..cmon really! Comments like those must be kept to yourself.

Thanks 4-h I'm glad you enjoyed the little video. I appreciate your support. I'll post a screen shot of the mode I use.
