I think the biggest thing here is the type of hunts we go on. It is rare to ever dig 100 coins out of someones yard...and that is what i prefer to hunt...Yards of old homes and sites i have researched where something old once stood. I do find my share of clad i just do not post it on here...There is no need...It is clad...I usually buy my lunch or a drink with the clad i have found that day....So by the time i get home to take pix all that is left are the keepers....I guess maybe it is because in Upstate NY there are so many old homes and sites to hunt that i have not resorted to scouring tot lots and parks for new stuff.....most of the time i will not dig penny signals less than 1.5 inches....Unless i am at a site that has not had the clad traffic on it. I think silver is easy to find....All you need to do is hunt places that have not been hunted before. Like the old house down the road.....I went to a site 2 days ago and found over 50 coins the newest being a 1958 penny. Including 18 silver coins and 1 gold ring. If someone chooses to hunt newer areas and find clad so be it....I will however wait til that area is clad free and search it with my 15 and find all the silver left behind...hehe...Seriously though....It is not that we do not like clad....We just do not see the need to tell everyone we found it.......If i posted all the clad i found..(I hunt every day)....People would get sick of reading about it. So i post only things that i find interesting or of value....That is the beauty of it all....What I choose to do does not have to be what YOU choose to do.

But Gregg...If your problem is not having old homes to goto....And you do not like asking permission...I can send you one of my contracts i use and it may help with your obtaining permission from people....I found if people see something in it for them...they are more likely to allow you on their property. All you do is keep a binder full of pics from what you have found to show the homeowner...and show them the contract....And they sign away....Then you too could be a silver finding madman.

Oh and again....4000 coins is nothing to giggle at...It shows some serious determination. HH and if you want one of my contracts to try...just let me know

Thanks I have seen some printable contracts. Right now I hunt areas only on the direct way home from work in the morning. I have 10 parks between work and home so it does not cost me any extra gas! :) i also have a park 1/2 a block from my house. So I do know to find the old stuff I will have to burn some gas money.... :( I will save that for next year!...Maybe gas will be reasonable by then! ;)

I don't take the time to count it every trip, but I do average around $4-$9 in clad most trips(beach) an 2-3$ hunting parks., in the past 1 1/2 years I know I have at least 6000 coins, maybe more,I don't plan on cashing it in,I just keep getting bigger cans to store it all .Its just about to the point where I can no longer pick it up. here's a pic. I took at the 1 year mark.I plan on taking another at the 2 year mark, I have a few months to go.

Nice picture I am cashing mine out in December because I would go crazy if my house was burglarized and they took my clad! :o

Re: For those who don't like clad...just a thought...

DFX-Gregg,
I dig alot of clad but I choose not to post it on TN. I am more into relic hunting and finding old coins. I am lucky because I have alot of old parks, fair grounds, houses, and civil war sites to hunt. I can usually hunt 12 months a year. I think it is great you have a goal to find alot of coins. I hunted a house this morning that I have not hunted before. All I found was 2 clad quarters 4 clad dimes 16 memorial pennies and 1 wheat. I find this amount almost everytime I go out. I was disappointed I didn't find silver. I think what you do is great because that is what you enjoy so don't let anybody knock what you do. I always enjoy your posts to see your coin totals and finds. Good luck and happy hunting.

Well that is not the point here...the point is more for those who do not hunt a lot and just want to see how a basic plan can result in some good numbers.

I know a lot of people don't set goals, don't count coins, and don't like clad.....wow maybe not setting goals..counting coins or liking clad is the problem...just a thought....

I don't set a coin count goal at all,or a time goal at all, because it really doesn't matter how many coins you dig up... 1 to 100 clad coins or silver coins or junk items......or how long you detect. The only goal I have when I go detecting is to have fun with my hobby. So your point , isn't a point at all.It is just to re-inforce YOUR thoughts and trying to convince others of your way of detecting is the only way.

I was out today and only found 7 pennies, some pulltabs and a Hot Wheels car, but I enjoyed metal detecting the park I was in. It WAS humid as heck and after 2 hours I needed to go drink some water. As I only had 11 target sounds from my detector in 2 hours, I still was thrilled digging up the 3 pulltabs,7 pennies and a hotwheels car.

Well Gregg as I "don't count coins" "don't set goals" and really "don't like clad" (because they come out of the ground so cruddy, but I am happy to dig them and put them in my finds pouch) I guess I have a problem...and to quote you, as you like to say..these are your words....not mine. You think that my problem is 'I metal detect AS a hobby to have fun detecting'

So be it.......your way works for you.......my way works for me.. You don't need to try and convince people your way is best, on everyone of your posts.

Thanks... :) I do not post all my finds, whenever I have a day under 50 coins or a low clad amount I do not post a picture. Yesterday I was over $4 in clad, but only 48 coins so did not take a picture. Was in a park that was packed with kids from day camp so after 2 hours and 10 minutes when battery pack died out (did have another with) decided rather then walking back and forth to change battery it was time to go! :) Because I do post a lot of my finds...boring or not....people think I post all my finds....which when I have a bad day I don't bother. Thanks for the support!

The point of the post was not which style of hunting is best! ??? The point of the post was I notice some people talking about their clad finds and saying they find $3-$4 when they go out but if they went out maybe just 2 times a week instead of one and set a few goals it would be easy to improve their numbers.

Re: For those who don't like clad...just a thought...

Gregg,
I have to admit I don't post clad. The first thing you have to do when you have a problem is admit it to yourself. I don't post, count or clean my clad. LOL

I guess the reason I don't post clad is that it is not what I'm looking for...but I'll take it. I usually avoid the newer schools and tot lots unless I need a quick MD fix and I don't have time to drive to an older site. That does not mean I don't respect the clad...hell if I see a penny in the street I pick it up.

My detecting club actually collects the clad from the people that don't want it then donates it to the charity the club chooses at the end of the year. This is the first year we are doing this so it should be interesting to see how much we accumulate. Prior years I would write the year on the top of coffee can then just throw my clad in the can.

Re: For those who don't like clad...just a thought...

Greg, I hate clad. Too much effort for too little pay off. I will say that I have been hunting alot of parks lately, just because the fields are planted and the shade from the trees in the parks are alot more cooler than open field.... So my exposure to clad has increased ten fold. The clad dimes and quarters ring up in the same grid area as the large copper and silver do, so I'm forced to dig them
I've averaged $4.50 in clad everytime I go out. Its great to get battery and drink money and all, but I hate taking the time to clean it.

The other reason I hate clad is that its B-O-R-I-N-G! There just isn't any excitement in it. No big ticket items, no cool relics... Oh well, summer is here and its too hot to worry about...

Why do you think everyone needs a plan to go detecting for CLAD coins... that is what you are finding most...correct????

So Gregg, you could take some of your own advice :P and go out 4 or 5 times a week and stay out
30 or 40 minutes longer each time.... ;D

you will double YOUR finds for sure....and by the end of the year you would have well over 12,000 coins.
Since THAT is what you like to do, get a large coin count total.

I have hunted much less than you this year, and I hunt park areas also. I have found over 25 silver coins and about half a dozen wheat back pennies, this year. What is your silver coin count, or old penny count for this year????

There are other coins in the ground besides clad coins.......maybe you don't like silver coins or wheat pennies...
or maybe you are in a new area that didn't use these older coins very much.

Some of us LIKE to see OLD coins come out of the ground. There are 4 parks within a 2 mile radius of where I live that were aquired by the city in the late 1950's and early 1960's. There are at least 10 more if I go in a 5 mile radius, that were aquired in the same time. These parks were used as parks even before the city aquired the land.
There are clad coins lost everyday in these parks, and silver coins that were lost years ago deep in these grounds also.
I like to see what you find and your coin count is GREAT. I like a laid back hunt just enjoying myself taking my time...getting a silver coin or old penny every once in awhile....while you are more worried about how many coins until I can reach 100 in 4 hours. Could be that is why you miss those more quiet sounds of the deep older coins.
Rush around to get your 10,000 clad coins.... I might get 1,000..but I sure will have LOTS more older coins that are worth more........ ;D ;D ;D How is that for a "point"??? And that is MY plan.

I think that is another problem with low end detectors, my detector came with a rechargable battery pack, I got an extra one and also the regulat battery pack. I always have a fresh rechargable pack ready to go...battery cost for me >>>0 But believe me I do under stand your point...how are these recharables that the battery makers have come out with? ??? Have you used them? Do they save you some $...

Actually I was joking, my battery bill is almost nil.

I use NimH batteries in my 2 AA packs, but they are backups for my D-cell pack.

detector_mod.jpg

I did this a few years ago because I got sick of the weight of the batteries in the detector, and the short lifespan of AA batteries. (White's tried to "fix" the hole in the back of my detector when I sent it in, heh) The headphone wire also runs along with the battery wire so I don't have alot of wire clutter.

I usually use Rechargable alkaline Ds but I figured i'd use up these Energizers before I moved to WA.

The recharables in most detectors are Nicads, I won't buy these anymore, they're not nearly as good as NimH.

Re: For those who don't like clad...just a thought...

Clad has been very very good to me. Some times a little clad is all I find. When I get in a clad hot zone and find 30 to 45 pieces an hour I love it. Just scoop in go. How can you not like it. Also you are betting that your detector has ID,ed 100% correctly. I am not willing to pass on a truly unique find because it read clad. I don,t have enough places to hunt to thumb my nose at clad sites. You might say I cut my teeth in detecting on clad, I never will pass it up.

Only problem is, you can't clean the things. To get 'em clean would take more than their worth.

Do you use a rock tumbler or a vibrating brass shell casing tumbler?

Go for the rotating drum. I have used both. My (cheap) vibrating case cleaner and the walnut husk media takes DAYS to work and the wet aquarium gravel is so heavy it won't vibrate with more than a coffee-cup sized load. The rotating tumbler with fine gravel is definately the way to go - for clad that you don't mind "whizzing" a bit.

Re: For those who don't like clad...just a thought...

Thanks everyone for the great responses! This turned out to be a good post....glad to hear different opinions, I actually will have to add some time or days to my hunt each week to get to 10,000. But I was told to try and set my goal above a comfort level. I received some static for only having a goal of 5500 on my counter. I put that up before the year started as a goal. But like I said I was told to try 10,000 that 7500 would be less then double where I am about half way through the hunting season. So a adding a few more hours a few more hunts......hopefully and i will see 10,000. Also whatever you are all looking for best of luck everyone!

Re: For those who don't like clad...just a thought...

My 25 cents worth, (I figure it is the inflated .02 cents worth) I always dig copper penny signals, and most of the time zinc penny signals. Clad coins, aka modern junk, always makes its way to my big bucket. If not for clad coins,,, parks and schools would be boring,,,, except for the casual gold or silver earring or rings. As long as modern "soda opening materials" are present, I will prospect at these treasure troves:)
