I just found this in a Lowcountry SC creek located on a plantation that dates back to the late 17th century. It's 12 inches long, hexagonal and tapered. I will do electrolysis when I get home & post better pictures later but I wanted to know what y'all think so far. Is this a pistol barrel? Thanks in advance.

Glenn

After cleaning it up a little and taking a better look I believe it is actually a musket barrel that broke off about a foot from the butt end. But then again I know very little about muskets.

Any thoughts?

Thanks. It's cooking in the electrolysis tank; I'll post pictures after it's done.

Think maybe you were right the first time. Looks like a pistol barrel. Fancy gun with that octagon barrel.

Here it is after an hour of electrolysis (just getting started). Is that a sight about halfway down?

Flintlock barrel for sure, that is the touch hole liner in the side of the barrel. The protrusion is most likely an underlug for attaching the barrel.

Thank you. So it's from a pistol? Any idea as to a date range?

With the underlug that close to the breech it is probably a pistol, can't say for sure though. It is not a hooked breech, that is just the remains of the breech plug. In that condition it is hard to be more definite.

Here is a closeup of the breach end. It looks a lot like the picture of a hooked breach to me.

I got sidetracked yesterday looking at liner pics and left off..
Swamped barrel , pinned perhaps by /through an underlug,it looks big for a pistol to me..not saying it was not though.
Hooked breech's did occur but a tang on plug seems more common on pistols till later dates with Hawkin or Thompson Center types.

Here is the barrel after more electrolysis. The closeup is what's left of the underlug.

It's a small brass fitting that is round & has a pinhole in the middle of it. Isn't that what you are describing?

Sorry I thought you were referring to the touch hole liner.
