Hi everyone,

I decided to finally bite the bullet and try out metal detecting. I’ve been debating about this for months.

So I went to the store today, and picked up a really cheap $75 metal detector. I decided to try something cheap, to see if I would like metal detecting first before investing in expensive equipment.

After assembling it, I put it to the test and went outside to my yard. I chose my yard because my house has a lot of history to it. It was a church in the 1950s, it belonged to a school after that, and then it belonged to three other people, and now me.

I found all these.

I mainly found pieces of metal, like nails, and stuff. I did find one metal toy dated back to 2000.

I also found a 1966 dime in my garden.

Well, that’s all I found today. I’m actually really enjoying metal detecting so far.

Congrats on your first metal detector and on your first finds !

The more time you have in the field and the better your detector - the more good finds you will make.
This is a "pay your dues" hobby that comes with a learning curve.
You can get a good machine (with target ID numbers) a Pin Pointer, Headphones and a Digger in the $500.00 range.
Also consider buying some lightly used, higher quality equipment from someone in this forum.
Once you own everything this hobby just about free - most of us have more than paid for all of our equipment with what we have found. I keep all my old finds but I've dug countless thousands of clad Dimes & Quarters, that I spend.

Good Luck & Good Hunting !

This hobby is also healthy. Look at all the exercise you get! Keep it up the silver and gold items will come!

You did alright for the first time.
On average how deep were the targets?
I would say between 1 and 2 inches deep.

Congrats on your first metal detector and on your first finds !

Thanks a bunch for the advice!

Thank you all for the welcomes to the hobby. I think I’m going to have fun.

I have a special camera I use when I record partridge hunting sessions, it attaches to my head. I think I’ll use it next time I go out and make a video showing you all how I detect so far.

Congrats it only gets better, I been at it for about 1 yr, don’t know why I didn’t start earlier in life

You're lucky to live on old property! Detect it until you can't hear anything anymore. Clean that yard out and you're guaranteed to find something good.

nice first run, keep at it. 3 years in... i consider it one of the great joys in live.

Better late than never. I started the same way. $75 Harbor Freight detector. Took it to some park woods nearby and was hooked ever since. 7 seasons in with thousands and thousands of holes dug. Been through a few machines now. So many things to find everywhere you go. Some days better than others but that's just life.

A metal detector is kind of like a lottery ticket that wins every time. Sometimes the prize is only a nail or aluminum pull tab; but there is nearly always a winner. And the expectation/hopefulness is always there. Wait til next time…
