I was surprised at how small of flour gold it caught without any carpet or miners moss. Lots of people here were saying it does really good on the small stuff, but this stuff was amazingly tiny. I bought this for small creeks and it doesn't take much flow to get the job done, so I'm really pleased with the sluice. I figure it will also make a nice sluice for quick sampling before setting up my power sluice to run more material.

Yes, great plan for how to use it :) Good luck and have fun with it!

No pics yet as I still have to pan out the cons, I did pan just enough to see what it was catching. I've been too busy working on the house to get much time to do anything and not been feeling real well lately but decided to take a day to do something I enjoy and don't know when I'll get time to pan the cons. I never take the time to pan when doing any prospecting as I feel its wasting time as I figure running as much material as I can is more productive and worry about panning it out later. I don't have much as I couldn't run the material through very fast as the water flow was a serious limitation on how fast I could feed the material, and its very tiny glacial gold but I know it works good and was worried about it catching fines like that.

Hope you feel better soon and get to relax with a finish pan in hand :)

Btw, I share your view on panning in the field. Waste of time other than to do a quick check on how much gold you're catching then dump the cons in a bucket and KEEP DIGGING!

Not panning in the field has its merits except when I start climbing back out 3,000 vertical feet back to my Bronco. I pan it at the source, sigh. But, thank you for the input on the amgs.........................63bkpkr

This is IN gold so no worry about a climb like that, I guess you find gold that small else where but this glacial gold can be like nat poop that's why I was worried about catching fines like that with no carpet or miners moss but I'm a believer now. I think if its catching stuff like that I'm catching it pretty good in my sluice.

I just got one myself and like it. Can you share about the angle you have it and aprox water flow ? I'm still tinkering with my setup and it sounds like you have it set up very well. I am still a beginner with a sluice.

I just set the flare as level as possible and its supposed to have the best angle built in when the flare is set level, notice the flare is set at an angle to the rest of the sluice on the grub steak model and it worked out really well. As for water flow I barely had enough to run it as it hasn't rained for a while here, when set up right you'll see the black sands dancing around in the nugget traps and behind the riffles which will be actively exchanging heavies for lighter material and I could start to see little colors collecting in the first trap between feeding it scoops when it was clearing a little. I would have really liked to have more water flow but it still ran great I just had to feed it real slow, I could see the heavy for light exchange happening really well while running it. With a rock setting under towards the end of the sluice the very end of the sluice where the water comes out was just a little above the creek water level, which was crucial with the low water flow as to not slow down the water exiting the end of the sluice.

I was classifying to 1/4" and running the material really really slow and you can use it with less water than really optimal but you can't get near as much material ran in a day which means less gold. I would have liked to have more flow than I had for sure.

Thanks a buch for the info ! I have mine set up at home at the moment with a recirculation system using a 650gph pump. Have an 1100gph pump showing up today. Going to make a different spray bar and use the 1100 pump later this weekend. Was tinkering with the 650 and the sluice angle last weekend and the flow was really slow at a flatter angle.
Classified down to 1/4 as well. My sluice legs I built are easy to adjust so it's an easy process. My current spray bar was made out of PVC I had around the house and the holes I drilled are all wonky. Not getting very uniform flow. My new one I will spend more time and actually measure and drill correctly.

Where are you located, Wingmaster? I'm down by Louisville. BTW, are you the same Wingmaster at Hunting Indiana? Once this bloody heat dies down a bit I'm going up to Crawfordsville with a bud to work Sugar Creek, I have an Angus MacKirk Scout I'm dying to get wet.
