First "haul" - Maverick Site
Finally just got around to cleaning this weekends (and last weekends
) finds from the Maverick site. The one side of the property holds an old farmhouse with four small barn-type buildings around it (see the full story and pics @ http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,202220.0.html). The other side holds a colonial era homesite and we believe there was also a wagon trail that cuts clear across all four fields here.
Here's a few pics - mostly iron goods with a few surprises in between. In the "group shot" I circled the oddball stuff : The metal within the red outline is all copper - it was also all one piece until I cleaned it :P - it looked like it was a crushed cylinder of some kind - approximately 4inches in diameter. The metal within the blue outline has the appearance of tin but it does not bend at all nor is it very light - if anyone has any ideas on what it could be I'd appreciate it. The iron that's outlined in red has a slight curve to it and is very thick with a "ridge" about an inch from the top - quite possibly a piece from an old kettle (this piece differs greatly from the other slabs of iron pulled from this field hence the reason I'm leaning away from calling this a piece of a broken farm implement)(plus I'm trying to be optimistic
).
The two biggest surprises for me though, came when I was cleaning all this guff today. The piece with the heart stamped in it looked like an old milk cap - it had no detail on it at all - when I hit it with some warm water and a soft brush I saw the marking and proceeded to "happy dance" right in my kitchen. If anything, I at least entertained Izzy for five minutes...
It's roughly the size of a quarter and obviously a half of a locket. My problem is trying to determine what material it's made of. It looks like it could be copper but I've never seen a copper locket before - it doesn't appear to be silver but can gold turn black after being in the ground for a very long time? I'm anxious to find out what it is but I do not want to scratch at it. I'll be taking it to get tested tomorrow. The second piece is definitely copper and I'd say most definitely a coin - unfortunately, it looks to be unreadable. This was actually "stuck in the mud" on the side of one of the flat iron pieces I dug - I was cleaning the iron and this dropped out and off with a big chunk of dried dirt. Pretty excited until I saw the condition BUT, it's an old copper regardless, and who knows - this could very well be my first colonial coin!
