I just received my new Ace 250 today. I live on the west coast of Florida so I assembled the unit, watched the CD and headed for the beach. Very disappointed. I tried an experiment by digging a 4 inch deep hole in the sand. I first placed a quarter, then a dime and finally a penny in the whole and filled with sand. The 250 didn't make a sound. I then opened the whole for each coin and still nothing. It didn't detect the coins until they were at approximately 2 inches deep. Settings were factory defaults. Can anyone comment on this?

how fast are you swinging? A foot pr second is the minimum. Did you do an air test?

I did not air test the unit. Since I'm a newbie I wasn't familiar with this procedure but based on your comment I looked around and found that apparently these detectors work better when moved rather than just being stationary. The test I did, I just put the unit over the coins, no real movement involved and the 250 made no sound. I will try again tomorrow but with more movement. Thank you for your comment.

You are welcome. I got a lot more out of the manual than the movie. Keep it in the bathroom that will make you read the whole thing! My friends refer to my can as "the library".

Please keep updating this post, I am very interested to see if you get it working properly. I am about a week from ordering an "Ace250" myself, due to all the excellent reviews I have been reading.

Hey, are you anywhere near St Pete? If so, maybe we can get together and I can show you the pointers to using it...

Back to the beach today and had a much better day. A friend came along to dig and we found a coin, fishing lures and assorted trash but it appears that my problems were with me and with the way I operate it, not the 250 itself. I'm still having some problems with pinpointing however. I played a video that someone posted on this forum regarding the 250 and pinpointing and it was very helpful. At this point I believe that I just need more experience.

Bran: I live in Venice and do appreciate your offer very much but the distance between us makes it inconvenient.

When you push the right side of the pinpoint button, you will see the bars at the top go up. When they are all the way across the screen you are right over top of your item. I love my ACE. good luck...the more you use it the more proficient you will get.

Alright, no problem. I do head down that way to Sharkies Pier from time to time, but it sounds like you've got the hang of it now...

i just received my ace 250 last night. went to my backyard today to do a quick test before i had to mow my lawn and go to work. i found 3 pull tabs, a key, small scrap metal, and a piece of a can. i only spent 30 min due to my time limit but feel that i got the hang of pinpointing these objects. they were all around2-4 inches. i believe that the area has quite a few junk items. it is a high traffic area near an entrance. i had high hopes of finding something interesting because my house was built in 1896. the ace was showing signals of silver and other coins in and around the areas of the objects i found but not consistantly. i played around with all metal and coin modes. if i held the detector close to the ground it showed coin signals even more but at 8 inches+. my question is will the detector give false signals if it is touching the ground? i know i have a lot to learn and practice makes perfect.

I also sent an email to Garrett about my problem in the sand and they said that the 250 is a "is a motion mode only detector" so you have to have this unit moving to detect things. They said that their models like the GTI 2500 or the Master Hunter CX Plus can just be held steady over an item.

The patience and experience will pay off for you, Pete. I got my Ace 250 last fall and am STILL learning. It's a great little machine as is proven by the many cool finds in the "Today's Finds" section of this forum. Do yourself a favor and watch all the "Discoveries" videos here and the ones on You Tube (just do a search "Metal Detecting" or even several under "Ace 250").

Keep us posted on your progress and finds!
