First Button but stumped

Ive never heard of someone finding one in America but in England you can find things called livery buttons. I pretty sure they were used to identify a horse or other animal. With a lot of research you might get an exact ID on who owned it.
They were worn by the servants to show which Family you served.
Seen a few turn up in the US. Most of them are the flat buttons circa 1830s, this one is a 2 piece late 19th C type which are less common, as they were going out of fashion.
