I have been metal detecting for quite a while and frequently read the "Today's Finds" forum. I very rarely post, but I have finally found something worth showing off. Every treasure hunters dream is to find a gold coin and I finally became a member of that exclusive club this weekend.

I went out to a site in Arkansas and had my best day detecting in over 15 years. My first find was a 1917 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. That was a first for me and I would've been happy with just that. Had a dry spell for a while and then my next find was a 1918 Mercury dime. Found a nickel next that was in pretty bad shape and was unable to read the date. I was still thinking to myself that I was having a pretty good day, even though the signals were far and few between.

My next signal was in the pulltab range on my detector, so I pinpointed the target and dug the plug. I then spotted in the bottom of the plug a dime size target covered in dirt and I observed yellow around the edges. I was thinking that it was a tarnished dime because of the size. It came out of the ground yellow and it did not register to me that it could possibly be gold. After a few seconds it finally sunk in that I could have possibly found a gold coin because of the low VDI reading. I picked it up and carefully removed some of the dirt off of the coin and saw that I had found a 1910 2 1/2 Dollar Indian Head Gold coin.

Needless to say, I was excited and shaking as I looked it over. Since it was the size of a dime, I was afraid of losing it and also of it getting scratched up in my pocket, so I carefully placed it inside the plastic cover of my detector meter to protect it while I closely searched the surrounding area for more. I found another corroded nickel and then decided it was time to show off my finds.

I have hunted sites before where you would think there was gold around, but never came up with one. The find was truly unexpected and took a while for it to sink in. I was in a pretty clean area and was basically hunting in all metal at this point. If I had been in a trashier area, then I probably never would have dug the target since it registered in the pull tab range. It goes to show, that you have to dig everything and patience will eventually pay off.

Thanks to everyone on the positive comments. Here are some updated pics of the coin. I have been a dedicated follower of Treasure Net for several years now, but have not posted pics because I basically didn't know how to. Been experimenting some and have finally figured it out. I have made some good finds in the past that I have wanted to show off, but never got around to it. Now that I know how to, I will start posting more often. I do appreciate all of the positive comments. Happy Hunting!!!!!!!!!!!!

Raycan,
"THOSE" are some truly nice finds! Would you be good enough to enlighten us with a few details: what detector, with/or without earphones and what settings on the detector.

Thanks for sharing!! 63bkpkr

Congratulations on the Gold, :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:I would love to find a gold coin. I just hope that I had enough time to dial 911 before I hit the round.

If I had found that coin the headline would read, "metal detectorist found dead of apparent hear attack, gold coin in his hand. He will have to be buried with the coin since it couldnt be pried out of his fingers."

Man what a find, congrats

wow!!!!! GOLD!!!! this is why we pick up detectors! :icon_thumright: Congratulations ! and enjoy your great finds!!! (I'd put them in glass and keep history alive!)

how did you get it so clean? i mean it must of had incrusted dirt in the inclusions and lettering?

Nice Gold Coin

Really nice find. The gold coin is awesome!

Of course the find of the coin is more valuable then the coin itself. Out of curiosity though I looked in my coin price magazine, it says 492,682 were minted of the $2.50 1910 Indian head coins. It shows values based on a system I still don't understand. So not sure how to rate them by condition. VF-20 = $255, XF-40 = $290, AU-50 = $310, MS-60 = $420, MS-63 = $1,550, MS-65 = $7,500, PRF-65 = $35,000.
