I have been metal detecting for quite a while and frequently read the "Today's Finds" forum. I very rarely post, but I have finally found something worth showing off. Every treasure hunters dream is to find a gold coin and I finally became a member of that exclusive club this weekend.

I went out to a site in Arkansas and had my best day detecting in over 15 years. My first find was a 1917 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. That was a first for me and I would've been happy with just that. Had a dry spell for a while and then my next find was a 1918 Mercury dime. Found a nickel next that was in pretty bad shape and was unable to read the date. I was still thinking to myself that I was having a pretty good day, even though the signals were far and few between.

My next signal was in the pulltab range on my detector, so I pinpointed the target and dug the plug. I then spotted in the bottom of the plug a dime size target covered in dirt and I observed yellow around the edges. I was thinking that it was a tarnished dime because of the size. It came out of the ground yellow and it did not register to me that it could possibly be gold. After a few seconds it finally sunk in that I could have possibly found a gold coin because of the low VDI reading. I picked it up and carefully removed some of the dirt off of the coin and saw that I had found a 1910 2 1/2 Dollar Indian Head Gold coin.

Needless to say, I was excited and shaking as I looked it over. Since it was the size of a dime, I was afraid of losing it and also of it getting scratched up in my pocket, so I carefully placed it inside the plastic cover of my detector meter to protect it while I closely searched the surrounding area for more. I found another corroded nickel and then decided it was time to show off my finds.

I have hunted sites before where you would think there was gold around, but never came up with one. The find was truly unexpected and took a while for it to sink in. I was in a pretty clean area and was basically hunting in all metal at this point. If I had been in a trashier area, then I probably never would have dug the target since it registered in the pull tab range. It goes to show, that you have to dig everything and patience will eventually pay off.

Thanks to everyone on the positive comments. Here are some updated pics of the coin. I have been a dedicated follower of Treasure Net for several years now, but have not posted pics because I basically didn't know how to. Been experimenting some and have finally figured it out. I have made some good finds in the past that I have wanted to show off, but never got around to it. Now that I know how to, I will start posting more often. I do appreciate all of the positive comments. Happy Hunting!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Finally something to brag about-Silver and Gold weekend

What is funny is that one coin would have made up for 15 years of trash. I can't wait to find something even close to as cool.

Re: Finally something to brag about-Silver and Gold weekend

any gold coin is cool but this could be a reproduction coin as the two and half dollar gold coin was only minted 1908 to 1915 then again 1925 to 1929 i was interested in your coins value and this is the info i came up with still very cool find

Re: Finally something to brag about-Silver and Gold weekend

any chance of a better picture? That could be a 1910...

Re: Finally something to brag about-Silver and Gold weekend

briz06 could be right could that be 1910 not 1919 cause the coin looks to date worn to be a repro its a very nice looking old gold coin i did not mean to belittle your find in anyway its just i did check the coin facks in the red book 2010 and 1919 just is not there then i typed 1919 coin search in and it also confirmed that 1919 did not exsits hope it is 1910 what an awsome find good luck and good hunting

Re: Finally something to brag about-Silver and Gold weekend

It appears to be a 1910. The circle on the 0 is larger than the circle on the 9.

Great find. Nothing like finding a Gold Coin with a Metal Detector. I found a 1852 1 Dollar in 1985 and remember it like yesterday. I am only 70 miles away if you need any help cleaning up that site. LOL
