OK, I posted on here a couple of months ago that I was positive I had found a worn 1916-D merc, but of course the thread didn't get very far because I didn't post any pictures. Well, I finally got around to getting my camera up and running so I will be including pictures with all my finds from this point on (hopefully :laughing7:)

Here she is, please give me your opinions. This coin is VERY worn, and the D can't be seen with the naked eye. When I blow up the coin with my camera, to me it jumps out.

I have included the front and back of the coin, as well as the blown up back. I also included a heavily contrasted picture that may help the D stand out, and Also I traced the D in a separate photo so I can let you guys know what I think I'm seeing.

I hope it is the holy merc grail. Your opinions will let me know whether I should bother sending this to PCGS. I don't even care if they can give it a grade, I just want it to be positively identified. Even if it would sell for $100, that would be cool.

I go through something like $50k in junk 90% US silver coins every year. I buy for just over melt and I toss back tons of early date mercs in conditions lIke that. I wont even consider buying them unless they're at least F12. It's just junk, cull, slick silver.

Misinformation is poison.

Wow, lol....ok. How is FACT(completed EBay listings) misinformation? Just because you are too lazy or do not care about small premiums doesn't make it poison. Get your facts straight before you try to act all high and mighty.

I'm sorry if you could reliably sell 1916-S mercs in AG3 for $5, I would be all over it. That is an outlier.

maybe, but it took all of 2 seconds to find so it cant be they only one. there are a lot of ways to make small premiums to uneducated buyers.

Go for it, I've got bigger fish to fry than making $2. Even if I sell 50 of them, that's only $100.

I'll bet most of the sales of slick '16-S Merc's on ebay are to people that are hoping it's actually a D based on the location of the MM or something.

Bigscores: misinformation is poison, you're absolutely correct. and on that note all corrections of posts that contain unknowingly (or maybe in rare cases knowingly) wrong information, are justifiably corrected by members in subsequent posts. That's the way it's gotta be, agreed on that one man.

My two cents; so far I've gotten the best deals selling 90% on ebay, fees or no fees. Maybe I could do better on craigslist, but I'd rather not deal with the spam and wishy-washy clientele. On ebay I notice most coins sell as "rolls", and not as weight of silver. In fact, I notice the auctions that sell 90% silver based on weight almost always end lower than those that are auctioning based on face value (or rolls). This is because face value is a commonly accepted way to sell silver, and is based on the "new" weight of the face value coins, whether for wrong or for right. Selling for weight is simply that, you will get less for slick coins.

As has been pointed out by diggummup and others, it's all about how ya sell it

big scores, do you buy at melt looking for rarer dates and resell commons for melt? just curious, It sounded like maybe since you go through so much. I've always wondered if you could do well doing that

I see what you mean, it could be an S, but D is what my eye sees first. I would believe either, I just want to get as many opinions on here as possible and then I'll be able to decide whether to play gamble a PCGS submission. Of course, If I submit it with two other coins I think I can get them all for $15 apiece

You will never know unless you try!!!! Go for it!!!
