OK, I posted on here a couple of months ago that I was positive I had found a worn 1916-D merc, but of course the thread didn't get very far because I didn't post any pictures. Well, I finally got around to getting my camera up and running so I will be including pictures with all my finds from this point on (hopefully :laughing7:)

Here she is, please give me your opinions. This coin is VERY worn, and the D can't be seen with the naked eye. When I blow up the coin with my camera, to me it jumps out.

I have included the front and back of the coin, as well as the blown up back. I also included a heavily contrasted picture that may help the D stand out, and Also I traced the D in a separate photo so I can let you guys know what I think I'm seeing.

I hope it is the holy merc grail. Your opinions will let me know whether I should bother sending this to PCGS. I don't even care if they can give it a grade, I just want it to be positively identified. Even if it would sell for $100, that would be cool.

I am just extrapolating big rolls statement. I am a amateur collector.

The D, and S are in different spots on the coin. Off by just millimeters.

The mark on your coin is where the S lives. Not the D. The D lives in a spot CLOSE to your phantom mark. But not over top of it.

Do you know what a die is? They use it to strike the coin. The mintmark was punched into that by someone at the Denver mint after they received the die from Philly. Because Denver only used one reverse die for 1916 Merc dimes, the location of the mintmark is a definitive way to determine the coins legitimacy.

The mintmark on your coin is far far too low to be a Denver coin. The D mintmark on '16-D mercs is high and right near the leaf. The high mintmark location is why so many remain identifiable in low grades like FR2 or AG3.

In summation, I believe your coin is 1916-S.

Unfortunately man, he's right. The mintmark would be in the EXACT same spot on every single coin. Here is where it should be, use the three leaves as a guide.

Sorry man. :icon_pale:

I just came back to this thread. No way that I'm young enough to burn the midnight oil like others. BigScores is right about the placement of mint marks, and CSW with the photographic evidence supports this.

Look on the bright side - you still have silver and you didn't waste the cert. fee. The hunt goes on...

i would have thought it was a "d" mm as well... i would still get it checked out by experts, but if they ask you how you got the coin, it was passed down from your grandfather/relative ;)

Don't waste your time or their time, it's not a '16-D. I'm 100% sure.

I'm not going to call myself an expert, but when it comes to identification and verification of '16-D Mercs, I know my stuff. I've picked 4 from junk silver lots in 2 years, all of which are now slabbed between FR2 and G4 by PCGS.

it's not my coin, i am just expressing my opinion. thanks friend.

yep I see the S now, thanks guys for pointing that out to me. CSW, that's where I was afraid the D was supposed to go, but I was unsure of how much variability there was in the location of the mint mark. As Diver Down says, I'm just glad it's been identified and now I won't waste time or money shipping it out to PCGS, just gonna add it to the pile! Mission achieved by posting here, thanks guys

And yes big scores, I know what a Die is, I've been collecting coins for a LONG time

Hey it's still a 4 dollar coin for .10!!!! 4000% profit ain't bad.

Obvious a little let down knowing it could have beetle holy grail but hey now you can still hunt for one!

I've got quite a few slick mercs I'll sell you for $4 a piece. It's worth $2.50 max, but hey, that's better than $0.10 by a mile. :)

I respectfully disagree. While you may be right I think it's a 2.50 book coin but nevertheless it is worth at least 4 bucks in the right place. If this is worth 5 that coin can fetch 4 easy

Honestly it was fun just trying to figure out what the dang mint mark was. Plus heck yea, I'll take a merc for 10c any day. It's still filling a hole in my CRH book to whether it's a D or an S. or course, a d would've been nice - just gonna keep looking. Hey if mountainman can find a 1955 DD, anything is possible!

Just because one idiot will pay $5 for it doesn't mean it's worth $5. The average selling price of a Merc in that condition, regardless of year (excepting the keys of course), is melt.

Are you serious??? Did you just say "just because one idiot will pay $5 (proven) doesn't mean it's worth $5"? Isn't that an impossible statement? Lol, ok whatever.....

And I'll show you several more examples if you wanna debate the "avg price"

I go through something like $50k in junk 90% US silver coins every year. I buy for just over melt and I toss back tons of early date mercs in conditions lIke that. I wont even consider buying them unless they're at least F12. It's just junk, cull, slick silver.

bigscores, why be so negative? All your talking down on people isn't necessary. if you don't have something nice to say, simply don't say it. Make this froum a better place.
have a good one buddy.

Misinformation is poison.

Fallacious information is absolutely "poison", but why be so impugning?
