It Looks Great.

Very nice! Once you get that cleaned up a bit it should look pretty good. One question though...this is the picture of the back that they had on heritagecoins.com. Yours doesn't have the rays between the stars? Did they change the shield nickels at some point?

Thats a very nice find.
Hope you can find more at that site.
Looks like it was lost when it was fairly new.

Yes, they did change the reverse. Only the first two years I believe had the rays between the stars. After that, they did away with them. I loike the rays personally, but then again I'm not the one in charge of things!

Thanks!

Look closely at the date. They made an 1882 over 1883. From the pic. it doesn't look like the overdate though.

Nice coin.

You might want to think twice before cleaning it.

That consistant red patina is very desirable amongst a growing number of dug coin collectors.

Silver coins are common. Your coin (with its patina) tells a story.

So where you surprised when you dug it up? Did you notice how much lower it read compared to a modern nickle? Good find, I do not know of anyway to clean these up. The color is what it is.

Excellent find!! The shield nickel is one of those coins I've always wanted to find.
What reading did you get? Did you almost not dig it? WTG!!! HH

WoW Beetle!!! Congrats on that find!! :o

Nana ;)

Thanks for all the kind words, folks!

I have to tell you that it was a fairly stable nickel signal on the Ace 250. But as I swung, the further away from the center I was, it would jump from nickel to penny (high penny, I believe)... but it was a strong enough signal that it had to be dug. An old place like this is, not too many signals get left un-dug! I've dug some Buffalo's and one "V" nickel from here in the past, so no, it didn't really surprise me. Then again, I was figuring it would be a Buffalo or a "V"!

As for cleaning, other than letting it soak to get some more of the surface dirt loose, I'm leaving it alone. I would no doubt lose a lot of the detail if I started cleaning it, so I'll leave it be!

Very nice find Beetle! Hope you can get back for a few more hours. HH, Mike

Once the coin is free of bumps and dirt you may want to dry it and coat it with RENAISSANCE WAX.

This wax was made for metal and gives coins a nice wet look. It also brings out the natural color of the coin with depth and smoothness.

I use it on most of my cleaned ancient coins.

Very nice find, someday I will find one that isn't in a seeded hunt.

Great find Beetle.....if I ever get out of these "baby boomer" sites....I'd like to find one of those. Very Cool.
