I have been wanting to hunt this yard for a couple of years now, but have never found the owner home. So today I drove by and his car was there. Talked with him for a little and he told me and my hunting partner to have at it. My partner found a Rosie, a Merc. and about 7 or 8 wheat's. I found this Indian, the quarter, pocket watch and this good for token. It says H.T. Steepleton. This is the second one of these good for tokens we have found. So if anyone has any info. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

There was a Halsey Steepleton who hauled salt from chicago for some type of pickling that his family did. I think his fathers name was Scott....this was in Knox Co. Illinois

Nice finds lucky, very good idea to give the owner a few wheaties. Congrats on the silver.
Still working on that idea we talked about.

Henry Thomas Steepleton was born November 6, 1879, son of Woodford & Sophia Steepleton in North Henderson. By 1900 he had moved out of his parents' home and in 1818, 1920 and 1930 was shown as a barber in North Henderson. As Stoney pointed out, his wife was Bertha. It was not unusual for barbers, especially in small towns, to supplement their income by keeping a pool table and/or card game going in their barbershop. That is probably the case with Steepleton, and the reason for the token - they were used as stakes in games rather than violating local laws by gambling for cash. His token is not listed in Vacketta's book, Trade Tokens of Illinois, but it was written in 1983 and a lot of tokens have surfaced since then.

Wow, Lucky! How in the world did I miss this wonderful post! :P :P :P :P

You're off to a great start...which is a good thing. You're going to need a head start to stay ahead of me. ;)

Just teasing you....Nice indianhead...great quarter!

Cool finds and fascinating potential histories on the token! I love popping onto this board and getting inspired to dig!
