Filenes Restaurant Tag?

Filene's Restaurant Tag?

Got this at a place that's yielded many relics from the 1900s. The front has what reads

Filene's
96 (then a small letter "F")
Restaurant

I'm assuming it's related to the Filene's department store. Does anyone know what purpose this tag had, and possibly its age?
Was it possibly a tag similar to a deli, where you take a number and wait until it was called?
