Federal troop outpost discovered

1-25-10 Hi T-Net I had some time to search some old ground that was a stage stop from 1780 - 1880's . Destroyed by fire in the late 1800's..I have searched this place numerous times, but never the field 300 yards from the structure ruins. A local historian informed me of Federal troops camping at this field shortly before the Civil War. Temp. outpost for some a time till 1861 :o : :sign13::The once plowed field, has grown up with shrub pines, very difficult to move around because they grow close and the needles on these things are sharp. :-\ ::))Signs :icon_scratch: Private property ,posted ,lucky for me I knew the owners and received permission . After a 6-7 hour search I found the following relics and 3 coins . Found ; A star button with a glass stone , musket ball, 4 rivets ,poncho grommet, some flat buttons ,one cuff military button, alot of scrap. Coins found ; 1860 Indian Head ,1849 large cent ,and a 1858 LL Flying Eagle penny. sorry about the dirt . Finds from stagestop 1-21-10 My first finds for 2010. Found: 5 buttons , a pewter spoon handle , and a 1797 Draped Bust cent Pics 3 & 4 1-27-10 Played hooky from work for a hour , trying to locate a firepit and stumbled across these above ground finds . See last picture , gun flint and musket ball ,dug by dirtbikers . Chards and clay pipe found at site today. Thanks for taking a look CMD

Nice finds! I like the selection of 1 cent pieces you found. If you had only stopped somewhere newer on the way home to find a wheatie, you'd have a penny grand slam. I suppose you've found tons of wheats though.
:laughing7: It's funny you should say a ton, that is exactly how many I dug ::) No just wishing ! Nothing wrong with Wheaties and Indians . Learn from them , I did. Sort of like copper boot camp. Rarely search for them, lately . No disrespect towards those who do . Once u find Large cent copper it is hard for some to look for wheaties . My local streets ,where they hide, are annoying," noisey" ,and alot of junk . Prefer the quiet back woods areas . I estimate that I found more flat buttons than wheat cents "see my pics buttons total more than coins ,most of the time". The penny grand slam ,batting the cycle thought ,cool . Never thought of that !! ;D Thanks for the comment

I agree. Many wooded sites only give up the oldies. My best site has given up more than a dozen old coins, the NEWEST is dated 1838. You are correct about the flat buttons too. In these types of sites I would estimate I get 100 flat buttons to every small cent. (It is still nice digging Indians and "Fleagles", though).

My best grand slam had nothing to do with denominations. It was an outing where I found coins spanning five centuries. That is not an easy feat anywhere on this side of the pond!

Re: Federal troop outpost discovered

Screw that playing hooky stuff. Call in sick. There are at least twelve items in your photos that I've yet to dig. Twelve. You got a flu shot a few days ago, and you think you might be having a slight reaction. Say it out-loud. Practice. Plan ahead. Call in now for Monday. Think, man, think!
