Farm field find

Anybody have an idea what it is? Stamped pat'd april 16 97. Would that be 1897 or 1997, not sure if they still stamp patents on things to be honest.

I'm researching clamps now... I also found an old mason jar lid, anything think this could be a lid clamp for a jar like that?

I reshaped it a bit to get a better visual on it. Also took the picture so the stamped patent isnt upside down, perhaps we were looking at it upside down before.

Great I.D.! Now I know what mine is! It was wadded up into a lump when I found it. I didn't know what it's original shape was. Here's a couple of photos of mine....
