Hi Folks, I've never been able nail this one down definitively. It was found at a late 1800's early 1900's location. It's about 1 3/4 inch long and 1 1/4 inch tall. It snaps shut with just a springless friction type action. Its fancy front appears to made of copper that shows traces of a gold colored plating. Any ideas ?

I keep googling shoe clips... some are close, none seem correct...

Yeah, I searched collar clips, collar stays, brass collar button, antique collar link, vintage collar piece, etc... nada.

Must be called something different.

I think it has something to do with a shade puller for a window in a buggy or stagecoach

I just got this junk camera to work and it's still a piece of junk. Here are the pictures that I got from it. Sorry about the quality. I found out what it is was on the net but can't remember where.

Your pics are not that bad, just too dark. Try a darker background such as blue or green and take the picture outside in daylight. I can tell your lighting is poor. Also make sure its on Macro setting, flash off.

buckle for a steamer trunk?

or, luggage buckle like on the trunks or hoods of early auto's?

is it possible that half of it is missing?

like it's maybe half of a cloak clasp?

I don't know but, to me it seems more like something to hold leather a strap (man Purse) ? It just looks more like a piece for leather in clothing or accessories possible ?

I hope these pictures help. There is a patent date on mine but I wasn't able to find it on a patent search. It reads "pat June ,29, 85 and has Z&M underneath. Mine is the size of a nickle. It looks like the hooks on the back were pushed into cloth.

Your Z&M is Zinn & Messer. There was no patent listed for the patent date, but after lots of messing around with the searches, and looking through lots and Lots of patents from 1870 to 1890 for similar items, I've got it. ;D (I believe the patent date listed on the item was one of several reissue dates--which are next to impossible to search. The original patent is before 1881.)

Green Check Please.

Awesome job. The patent date reads 1875 in stead of 85. I just got done doing some cleaning with a needle on the date. Thank's for the help.

Thank you for the kind replies. A BIG thank-you to Wolverine. Without his patent date to get the right time frame, I don't think I could've found the patent. And also thanks to everyone who posted their examples. Accumulating enough examples and eventually clues and patterns start to surface. :)

Montana Jim gets Big bonus points too. He was right on track with "This Has to be clothing-related."

Cheers,
