Hi Folks, I've never been able nail this one down definitively. It was found at a late 1800's early 1900's location. It's about 1 3/4 inch long and 1 1/4 inch tall. It snaps shut with just a springless friction type action. Its fancy front appears to made of copper that shows traces of a gold colored plating. Any ideas ?

That thing sure seems familiar... :-\

Maybe a dress clip, for the back of a dress? Or for a fur?

Good work! I knew it...

Problem is we never figured it out.

I suppose we now have another 'pattern' though to research or probably just add to the puzzle. And at least these things seem to breed , unlike The Counter

Well I'll be danged!  I just found one of those thingys this year too!  Different style, smaller size--same post in the center of it, and same attachment on the back (although the flanges/"wings" like on the other two examples are broken off mine).

The plot thickens.   :o

This I believe is the correct alignment for viewing this thingy

This is getting interesting ! Don in SJ and BuckleBoy also have similar pieces. A couple of folks in Don's original post strongly suggested it is a bale clip, but we still have some uncertainty....... But there are some good leads to follow. Too much snow on the ground for me to swing the coil, a little research will be fun :icon_study:

Okay...maybe I got your answer.

A lapel pin....

This description fits but haven't been able to find any exact pictures.

Think about it, slides up on the lapel, so the figure would be right-side up as pictured, and snap through a button hole...

Could be worth further checking anyhow...http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6279202.html

Here are some photos of the one I found.  The back piece on it is slightly smaller than a quarter.  Same "attachment piece" on the back, same function, and same "post" in the middle, but the flanges on the back that the other examples have are broken off of this one:

It seems odd for there to be some sort of attachment on the back, as well as a place for something to attach to the post and be clamped down. :icon_scratch: Could it be something that attached to a coat, that a medal or watch chain, or something else attached to?

Yeah, this one's a puzzler. Though it's hard to tell with your piece Buckleboy, but based on the designs of Don's and my piece, it appears the hinge should be facing downward if it is to be worn on something. I've googled every type of clip or clasp I could think of and nothing yet. My wife thinks I'm working on the taxes ;D

I found one with the same clipping device with an Oriental theme. I found out it's a collar clip that held the collar together at the neck. The one I have is smaller and about the size of a nickle. I hope this helps.

I just got this junk camera to work and it's still a piece of junk. Here are the pictures that I got from it. Sorry about the quality. I found out what it is was on the net but can't remember where.
