I've used mine on dirt a few times. You really have to pay attention to how the signal comes in and pinpoints . It works . Found some old tokens with it. No it will not pick up tiny flakes of gold , I know this cause I have some and ran it right on the coil and it didn't even make a peep.
I was under the impression it runs from 1.5 to 25 kHz in increments so can someone explain why it doesn't hit on them? I've always been curious about that.
 

Small targets like gold flakes don't have enough metal content to trigger the machine. An Excalibur will work fine in dirt. The main disadvantage is no VID or depth readings. It's also a bit heavy and not balanced as well as other land machines.
