If you ignore the upper part past the horizontal line that is not connected to the rest, it would be a 5. I don't see an over stamp, wouldn't there be a stamp mark through the S shaped line.

Looks rather like a six above and slightly to left of the five.
regardless of how it occurred it is a very interesting recovery! Congrats

Yes but the damage "mis/repunch" could have been done at the mint. Isn't that what makes error coins what they are?

You really need to take it into a coin shop. We can speculate all we want but until an expert can hold it in his/her hand you may never get a correct assessment. IMHO- I see the 5 underneath so it could possibly be a 6 over 5 but there are a few things I see that leads me to believe it may be post mint. I DO hope, however, that you have found an unknown error and that you profit greatly off it!! Good luck!

Now to address your Chemistry qualifications. Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics are pure sciences and all other Sciences are applied science therefore based on the above three. Chemistry is a mathematics based science and the science of Metallurgy is a branch of Chemistry. So I think the Chemist PhD is more than a qualified.

Thanks Mammoth now the question, where and who around southern Illinois can do this?

i wish i had more experience on this but i dont . to me it looks like a restamp error,, but it does not make sense . it looks like a 5 and 6 mixed up but no bottom part of the 6 , which i think it would be there . it looks more like a error with the 5 , for what ever reason when it was stamped the top of the 5 was broke and pushed around and pushed into the penny is what i think. i can not see a break between the top curl and the face of the penny ,, like it is solid so i do not think it was done after it was stamped .
but people can make great fakes ..sooooooo...:dontknow:

I don't know what it is but I am having fun talking to you all.

It looks to me like it was a mint error. Probably some metal debris was trapped on the die when the coin was struck causing the extra 6 looking curl. Clogged dates and mint marks are fairly common so it's not likely to be worth anything but you can get appraisals from most coin dealers for free. I hope you're offered a million for it but would be surprised if you got an offer over $10.

I think he has a keeper there. But I know nothing of coin tampering. It looks legit to me. It would stay in my collection. Contact a expert as we arm chairs are just gonna tell you what we think. Good Luck.

The penny is very popular. you most likely have a minor double die. Counterfeits do exist. It is a keeper. According to the red book. It comes from improperly prepared dies.

I would send it in to PCGS or another professional grading service. They know of available error coins and would be able to determine if it is an error, a damaged die strike, cud, planchette error, post mint damage, or environmental damage. It would clear it up for you. Either way, good luck and I hope it's worth as much as the 1968 Double Die!

I like it, it looks to be made that way

dugin, look real close at recondiggers' enlargement- the '5' is upside down. Is that even possible? I can't explain the little hyphen mark though. Hope it ends up being a mint error- for your good find. I agree with others here- get it checked, otherwise you will not know for sure! HH yelnif...

I've looked at this coin very closely and I agree the 5 is rotated.

You maybe be able to see this better in this picture, I could only rotate the image in 90 degree increments, so I couldn't get the 5 to be exactly upright, but if you compared it to the 5 on this regular coin you can see that it is a 5.

If you open the first image in another tab you should be able to click it and get it to enlarge, then clicking between the two tabs and you can clearly see on the OP's coin it is a rotated 5.

I'm not sure how the 5 would've got rotated, but it's doesn't look to be a coin that has been altered, it looks like it came from the mint that way, IMHO

Okay I've never had a coin graded or inspected. I just send this penny in the mail and hope it gets returned or what. I don't trust many.

It's not that easy to get a coin graded(though I wish it were). The best thing would be to find a local coin dealer and ask for their opinion, then if they think it's an error and not damage you can send it be graded through that dealer.

I think the '2' is upside down and it's a coin from the future 2561

:)

Great find

I wouldn't be so quick to ship it off to pcgs or ngc as is. Grading and postage fees will set you back probably $50 or more. Plus it would come back in a genuine holder with no chance of a problem free grade. I am a member of the pcgs chat forums. With your permission I'd like to post it over there and get their opinions. With a little luck Fred Weinberg will check out the thread and comment. At the very least we will get some comments by others.
