Just so everyone knows, I submitted a picture of this to that historic website and requested information to some NOK to return this to if they know of anybody...
Chester S.C. is a long way from Oklahoma .... He died in France in Normandy, so this must have been returned to his father maybe ?
Maybe he lived in Chester after the war and somehow lost it in the yard after that... clearly it was not buried with him..
While waiting for the historic website to get back with you, I'll see if I can locate a next of kin. Will post my progress.

Thanks for your service. What rate were you? I was MMN for 12 years.
My dog tags also didn’t look like this. One of the links I posted shows a brief timeline of the changes dog tags have seen over the years.
MMS Mess Management Specialist ... Or cook to all you swabbies ... 🤣

Ok, some research on FamilySearch reveals that Clinton had a few siblings, who also are deceased. His oldest brother Homer Eugene Griffin had a son named Donald Eugene Griffin, who is also deceased. However, someone by the name of Lori Jean Toone has made several changes to his FamilySearch record - and often times they are either related to or knows a close relative of Clinton. I sent her the following message via FamilySearch. Will post her reply assuming she does...

Hi Lori, my name is Al Price (aka invent4hir). I noticed that you made several changes to Donald Eugene Griffin's FamilySearch record. Are you or do you know a close relative of his Uncle Clinton Howard Griffin? Reason for asking is that a group of us on Treasurenet is looking for Clinton’s his next-of-kin. One of his dog tags was found by a fellow TreasureNet member and I'm just trying to connect. You can see the tag and info at https://www.treasurenet.com/threads...thanks-for-the-incredible-information.709154/. Please let me know if you are or know a close relative of Clinton who would treasure the dog tag. To confirm this is legit please see my involvement in the return of another dog tag at https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/memories/LZJY-X8W.

It sounds to me like the dog tag was buried as a ceremonial gesture by a family member.

Interesting, hadn't thought of that. Or maybe he lost it while training/on leave there. From 1941-43 there was the Southern Airways Contract Glider Pilot Training School at Greenville, which is about 70 miles from Chester.

That's an interesting take..

Part of the burial process is giving closure, linking them to a physical place to mourn and remember and a family member dying on some godforsaken beach and buried on the other side of the world away from friends and family does not provide that.
Nor does a dog tag in a shoebox tucked away in a cupboard.
Burying that dog tag and planting a tree on it can give that sense of place and also closure.

That may not be the case, but it sounds more likely to me than it being lost.

The only problem with this is that Chester SC is a LONG way from Oklahoma ..

Also nothing that I have seen here or online links him to Chester SC, Possibly the military base for Pilots but its a stretch because its so far away.. Possibly he was training there and came to party here, and got drunk and lost them while here... (but there was only 1 tag) or a relative gave a tag to a close friend who lived here and then somehow lost it in the yard ?

Agree, we can speculate about how the tag made its way there, but will never be able to confirm. If Lori replies she isn't or doesn't know any of Clinton's kin (or doesn't reply at all), I've already started working on plan B - researching who Clinton's sibling's descendants are.

Chester SC is very plausible, it's just 60 miles from FT. Jackson SC. It was also a primary glider training location for glider pilots during the formation of the 82nd, 101st and 11th Airborne Divisions. The training base was huge and used multiple training locations in and around Columbia SC.

"During World War II, Fort Jackson, a U.S. Army training center in South Carolina, played a role in glider training, specifically with the 19th AAF Glider Training Detachment using Aeronca TG-5 and Laister-Kauffmann TG-4A training gliders."

My brother went to basic at Fort Jackson. I know where that it... but its too far away from Chester for him to have been staying in Chester and training at Fort Jackson, its an hours drive, those numbers just don't add up.

It's possible that he was training there and came to Chester for a party with friends and they got drunk and he lost one of his dog tags..
But who knows...
It could have also been given to a friend of his AFTER the war as a momento, and the friend lived in Chester and lost it..
who knows,,

Yeah, who knows. There were many Army Air Fields and multiple auxiliary fields associated with the bases in SC before and during WW2. I also know Ft. Jackson well. I was there as an active duty soldier at the beginning of my 27 years as an Army Aviator.
