Hey Hey,

I make it a point to visit the local Goodwill at least twice a day. I stopped by after work and bumped into the manager. I asked "any new jewelry coming out tonight"? He said he had some, and that he was going to go through it and bring it out in a little while. "Cool, I'll hang around", I said. He brought 3 trays and I had first dibs on them.

First off, the receipt:

Item 1
A necklace that had something on the clasp, but I didn't have my loop on me. Upon further inspection, it says "KOREA". Wonderful.

Item 2
A sterling silver ring:

Brace yourself....

Item 3
14K gold ring:

Now you really need to make sure you are sitting down...

Item 4
A 24" long 14K necklace (marked "ITALY")

Hi TallGuyBry,

It was still a good find and a very inexpensive lesson in what not to buy. I heard someone once say that experience is that thing you get right after the event occurred where you needed it.

I would have thought the same thing.

Keep looking Hoss. I'ts out there! Now the clasp may be real. I read somewhere that they will change the clasp off real gold necklace and double their money on an unsuspecting individual. That is, remove clasp sell the real gold then sell the fake as real therefore doubling up.

Yes, I have had some similar instances myself over the last few months.

Picked up a bag of misc. jewelry for around $16.12. Ended up with a decent .925 bracelet. Then, when I was about to call it an evening, there
was this beautiful 14K Italy bracelet. The weight was 16.5 g making it worth between $515 and $520.

As for testing, I was a bit unsure because the size of the bracelet made me think it should weigh more. So, I brought out the acid testing kit and did three scrapes. The 18K acid destroyed the scrape. The 10K acid did nothing to the scrape, and the 14K acid was slightly agitating it but all scratches were still clear (which is what is supposed to happen).

Also, in the inconspicuous area I scraped, it was gold through and through.

The 14K Italy bracelet tested to be 14k, and the .925 bracelet test to be Sterling.

The remainder of the bag was primarily costume jewelry with a few junk pieces present as well.
