Sedwicks Cataloge lists Hundreds of 1715 fleet stuff.. , cross sides, Shields, etc.. for comparison..
the one above looks closer to 1620's or 1640's..the '8' is Early , and oM/J should be the fleet assayers.. above looks like oM/D ( 1641 Concepcion wreck, maybe)...
yet I do have 1699 dated coins from Goodpastures estate

Yet anythings possible.. like buying a lottery ticket !

I just assumed everyone here had the Sedwick #7 catalog. ;D It does go hand-in-hand with all the scholarly text in Craig's work, which is a must have for any 1715 fleet collector. I agree it is likely 1600's. Besides the Concepcion wreck it also looks similar to Lucayan Beach wreck coins. I don't really see anything to tell me it is a sea salvage coin, but that is difficult due to photo size. If it was in the ocean its been heavily cleaned at some point.

All the other ones from the earlier auctions got rare in a hurry too. I think I need #1 - #4. I'll pay a premium over original price to anyone who can let one go.

Jeff wins the first responder prize! I wrote the seller and told him that was not a klippe coin. Anyone know why?

Stan

Let me take a stab at it...
Was is because that coin pictured wasn't made by a m*****e first?
or could it be an incorrect date? I give ???

Trez

My lame attempt at smoking you out worked Trez. :D

Just my observation, but every 1733 coin called a "klippe" in the Ponterio Rooswijk sale had a small "o" or dot above the mintmark instead of the full sized "O" used on the cobs of that same year. There are probably some other identifiers traceable to the machine press dies used on the klippes, but this was the most noticeable detail in the seller's coin.

More Mystery .. I seek dated 1717 cobs, and got the one at Heritages sale a couple days ago..
Yet in looking thru the picture database ( I aquired this pic off Ebay ) .. they seem to look alot alike...

Hopefully they are the same coin - yet there is some differences...

More Chinese mystery ??

You should inquire with Heritage...tell them your concern (I would)
I hope this turns out not another chinese P.O.S

You seek just that date?

Hi Trez, Have a look at the heat cracks, they are in the same spot !
Ossy

Ossy,

Hello my old friend...how r u?
Good eye, I saw them...and yes.
I hope he finds out what it up...lets hope for the best.

I won't fire any shots, lol

They are the same coin. It is all in the lighting. Look at the very minute pores and scratches on both coins. They wouldn't reproduce that perfectly if one was made as a cast copy of the other. This is a good example of how proper lighting can really make a difference in a picture or digital image.

Sam, those aren't heat cracks. Actually quite the opposite, they are from a lack of heat. Wood for charcoal had been stripped from all the areas around Potosi by the 1700's. As a result of this lack of charcoal they didn't always get a full annealing process prior to striking. This is briefly documented in Alan Craig's book on silver coins from the Florida collection.

Like Trez I am kind of interested in why you are trying to hoard up all the 1717 coins? :icon_scratch: I'll keep my eyes out for you....
