Relic Hunting
Been hunting for years, and just never got my coil over a cannonball, until today! And three strange things: (1) Only 6 pounder anybody knows of, found within 5 miles of this spot (2) Found in a campsite - dropped, I guess, (3) Six inches away, a buttplate which appears to be a .69 cal smoothbore musket, though not able to say for sure, pretty eaten up.

Also found a New York Coat button, close to the surface so pretty eaten up.

Rounded the day out with a pewter shirt button a few dropped 3-ringers, and a spoon handle. I haven't had a really GOOD day since last spring, but my first cannonball was a huge thrill.

Great hunt PW!!! Love the ball & NY button. We didn't have hardly any NY Regiments in our area of Tennessee. WTG, Q.

Great find! Still waiting on my first complete ball. Looking forward to your next post.

Cool cannonball, that thing helped change American history back in its day!
Amazing that all these relics of war are still just waiting to be found under our feet :treasurechest::thumbsup:

PW that's a great day!!!! That ball is a beauty

No, no mold seam. It's a little "light" in some areas (Like graphite" from being close to a black swamp), so I'm keeping a wire wheel FAR away. I've found plenty of frags that weigh far too little and if you put them on a wire wheel, you can wear them away quick like plastic. I guess in some soil conditions, the ground "leaches" something out and makes the iron like graphite. So cleaning will just be light sandpaper and tung oil. JOEY FRESH - My calipers don't go that big! I just have small bullet ones.

Thanks for all the kind words. Not a big deal for a lot of guys, but def a bucket-lister for me.

I'd be tickled pink with that cannonball and the button as well, congrats!

I thought I saw a mold seem but couldn't really tell from pics, a regular wire brush might clean it up without hurting it,but not sure what you are working with there.Again congrats man, that is sweet!
