DUMPSTER DIVING GARBAGE PICKING READ & SEE WHAT IS FOUND HERE UPDATED 2012

Re: BESIDES M D DOES ANYONE GARBAGE PICK OR DUMPSTER DIVE FOR TREASURES cool stuff

Thought this was a good story, so I brought it back to the top...pretty interesting.

I wish we had a forum which compiled all of Treasure Net's best stories under one heading. I remember the Beekrock saga, the Onion Rings contriversy, that deal about finding all that treasure inside a house, some guy finding tons of silver coins packed in tackle boxes in a basement....makes for good reading on a boring day.

I agree with Night Stalker about this being a great post!

Maybe one of the admins could create a dumpster diving forum on the site for us to post more of our finds on?

This thread is getting too big for a single sit down and read for new people I would assume....

Re: BESIDES MD DOES ANYONE GARBAGE PICK OR DUMPSTER DIVE FOR TREASURES lots of pics

After Katrina, my ex-husband found a perfectly clean looking (NEW) 80HP dirtbike in a junkpile outside a flooded home. He stopped and put it in his truck.....he said it was "locked up", but after about 10 minutes of lubrication and just messing with it, it started right up. Now my girls ride it on their weekends with him.

I'd say that was at least a $1500 find.

He has many stories of finds after the storm...such as furniture, safes...etc. One safe they finally got open, there was alot of cash in it...but the water and mud messed it up...but of course that might have been just his story, considering he was behind on child support! Haha...oh well.

These are all great stories...I'm not sure I have the nerve to "garbage" surf. But kudos to those of you who do!

Found 12 of these 16 x 20 counter top display posters, circa 1952, many years ago. I just sold 1 today for $120.00 and I have 1 left.

i would never dumpster dive, witnesses say it looks more like a belly flop. Dumps, old car heavens transfer stations they're all fair game in my book. I can't remember anything all that memorable but suffice it to say when it's a pure matter of survival ther'se know place better to make ends meet. :D ;D :o 8)

Looks like an air purifier....
Yup, it's an Oreck air purifier. They sell for close to $150.

I always picked up old computers to make "Frankenstein" computers. Years ago, me and my buddies would dive at places like Staples; we got external CD burners which for the time were very expensive. Industrial paper shredders that just needed to be unjammed. Advertisement cutouts for video games that got great prices on ebay. I've also gotten a lot of replacement parts for my bikes that way, as well as some old skateboards.

Re: BESIDES MD DOES ANYONE GARBAGE PICK OR DUMPSTER DIVE FOR TREASURES lots of pics

Here's some things I grabbed from the garbage over the years: collectible beer cans, a Hercules comic book from the 1950's (in excellent shape), an unopened electronic kit, an out-of-print version of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a nice desk (now in my son's room), a nearly immaculate Sears Free Spirit 26-inch 3-speed bicycle (gave to my wife after replacing tires and inner tubes), a lawn mower, a 1960's Crosman air rifle (had seals replaced), a strobe light (replaced the bulb), a TV set (a neighbor replaced a part, gave it to my sister and she had it for about 10 years), another portable TV set (gave to my other sister for her dorm room), and a copy of Lorna Doone (late 1800's copyright).

Re: BESIDES MD DOES ANYONE GARBAGE PICK OR DUMPSTER DIVE FOR TREASURES lots of pics

Curious how things work i started raiding the neighbors cans at about age 10,I'd dismantle the stuff and See what made it tick.Figured out that I could often mix two broken items to make one good one.Much of my mechanical training was learned tearing down and repairing lawnmowers and such. After serving 4 years as a combat Air Controller I wanted a low stress job and went to work at a trout farm/ RV park repairing mowers and trucks.I'd drive the dump trucks and honey wagon. For those that don't know a honey wagon pumps out septic tanks. One day I was pumping crap and got a clog in the hose stuck there at the end of the hose was a used kotex with a beautiful gold chain tangled around it.I salvaged the chain and it set my mind to thinking. The truck was emptied into open evaporation pits an top of a near by hill and if one why not more gold in that thar stuff. Not wanting to wade hip deep nor snorkel in the foul sludge I knew I would have to retrieve the riches prior to dumping them.Wound up making a sluice box type of device and would average 2 to 4 items a month including engagement rings chains, diamond and opal rings. It baffled me that so many vacationers lost so many valuables.I even went so far as to " refit" the P traps on every sink in the park and found a mans ring with 9 rubes set in gold. Not once did anyone admit or complain of having lost anything in the sink or toilet. After my 2nd kid we moved to the big city to take a "good" job, they used me to set up a efficient money saving work cell which made me obsolete. To stay out of a higher tax bracket I decided to take the last 3 months of the year off and started selling unwanted junk at a flea market.I made so much tax free money so fast,I knew I needed to find more inventory.I ran an ad to clean garages and or haul away service.People would actually pay good money to me so I would haul away "inventory" that I needed anyway.I hooked up with a property manager at an large apartment building cleaned and the repainted for even better wages.Around the 1st and 15th of the month is golden in Apt. dumpsters what with people moving out.I wound up bartering for a 51 Studebaker School bus to swap meet out of.It eventually was outfitted with a head be and kitchenette.I'd go on "junkettes" to Hollywood and other well healed locals to raid their cans. When I turned thirty one I decided to further my education and moved to Utah.Put myself through school collecting alum cans I'd take classes Tues thru Fri and camp Sat Thur Mon hitting all the campgrounds in the High Uintas filling the van and canoe, salvaging abandoned and forgoten gear, diving around docks and launches and MDing around.Great times.I once salvaged three truck loads of alum from a Rock festival in Weber county fair grounds. In June I tore down a Die Casting plant hauling 468'000 pounds of salvageable material at an average off $110 a ton no body wanted it or the work,do the math.I've made a living many times over salvaging trash, and very much enjoyed the freedom that came with it.

It is truly amazing how the bug stays with you after so many years. I too started at a young age of 8 or 9 getting bicycles out of the garbage and making franknstien bikes. I'm 46 now and still do it.

Re: BESIDES MD DOES ANYONE GARBAGE PICK OR DUMPSTER DIVE FOR TREASURES lots of

Decided to go out and do a little junking today and got a bunch of good stuff. Here is the liquid cash part of my finds $ 6.75 and a nice working Craftsman Cordless rotary tool, CD's DvD's Lego's and much more.. Why do people throw out money I will never understand. The other stuff is for the garage sale or ebay.
Also last week I sold on ebay 19 Post Cards circa. 1907-1920 from Norway for $ 408.00 and I have 21 more listed now all were found in the trash.
I love looking for treasures that people throw out...
