Dug my oldest coin EVER today!!!! Member of the 1700's club!!!

Well Folks it's been a loooooong time since I have posted anything. We moved from central NC (Raleigh) to the NC mountains (Asheville) last year, so I haven't been out detecting at all until recently. My wife has a meeting in Raleigh this week so I decided to drive back with her and go detect one of my old spots. As a lot of you know, I have been hitting this 160 acre spot for years and have recovered a lot of nice CW relics and much more.
Today was a cold overcast day, but the drizzle stopped early. I was hoping to recover at least one CW bullet or button for old times sake. After firing up and ground balancing the mighty Tesoro Vaquero, I started my search in an area of scrub pines where myself and other buddies have found a lot of asst'd CW period buttons in the past.
Not even 10 minutes into my day I got a signal in an area that I know I have been over and over before. I dug down about 4" through the pinestraw top layer and into the compacted dry soil and I see a silver coin! Now without my glasses, that I had left in the truck, I couldn't tell what it was. :dontknow: I strained to look at it and saw what looked like a Chinese symbol. :dontknow: I pulled out my loupe to get a better l@@k and boy was I surprised!!!! Right then I knew it was Spanish silver. After a closer l@@k I see a very clear date of "1775" staring back at me! :occasion18: I about soiled myself, as this is the oldest coin I have EVER dug. After contacting a few friends I found out it was a 1 real coin. I don't know if I will ever find a coin older than that, but I am happy to have finally broken in to the 1700's! I plan on putting it into a display case and mounting it to my bedroom ceiling to look at. :tongue3:

Sorry for the horrible photos, but all I have with me to take photos with is my Blackberry.

Thanks for looking,
MM

Way to go Doug! Glad to see you're still on the prowl with your detector. You've recovered a real treasure there. I've been lucky enough to find two pieces of spanish silver, but both were worn nearly smooth. Hope you can find some nice places to hunt in your new mountain home.
Steve

Thanks Steve. I'll need to do my research to find some old properties. So far everyone I've met has been very friendly. Should be about 10 degrees cooler in the mountains so perhaps I can even hunt in the summer. The Raleigh area was WAY to hot for me.
I scored permission to a 1915 farmhouse and 12 acres just up the road from our new house. Scored a 1908 Barber dime, 1915/16/19 Wheats, and a 1992 half dollar my first time out so there is some hope there. :icon_thumleft:

Dug,

There are lots of great finds to be made in the Mountains. I'm sure you'll do well there. Main thing is to get out and dig more.

Killer find for sure, and congrats on the 1700s barrier. It WILL be less long before you break it again. Great coin, and have fun staring at that beauty every day for a month. I know I did when I dug my first.

Cheers,

Buck

Will,
You were the first person I thought of when I dug that coin yesterday. I knew if anyone would know what it was, YOU would. I didn't have your number handy though. I got it stored now for the next time. :icon_thumright:
Thanks for the call last night. It was great to hear from you. I kept it to only two beers BTW. :occasion14:

Cheers Buddy,
Doug

very nice find MM,, wish you had found it in Ashville though,, since that is close to my neck of the woods and would give me some incentive,,,lol
me any my son are pretty new to MD and just this weekend found our first CW relic , so me and him are both stoked .
it also really warms my heart to see all the posters that have come back to post for you..
again
Gratz.

Thanks Mical. Although I feel like an old timer on Tnet, I have only been on about 5 years. My finds over the years don't compare the the great folks I have met on Tnet. Also the wealth of knowledge here is unbeatable.
I remember my first CW relics too. One was a Union button, and the other a 3-ringer. They were both by a large oak tree at the same property that I just dug this Spanish silver.
Good luck to you and your son. Stick with it and you will be surprised how quickly your collection grows. :icon_thumleft:

You all are the BEST!!! Thanks for the awesome replies. I've been looking at this 1700's coin all day. :tongue3:
Hopefully I can find one of it's big brothers some day.

Thanks,
MM

Nice finds!! And to think, I'm still trying to find silver earlier than 1936!!

LOL. I hear ya Buddy. It will come. Soon you will break into the 1800's. It's a good feeling checking different accomplishments off of your list. It took me forever to dig a large cent while others were digging them like Memorial Pennies. :dontknow: My oldest coin before this find was an 1833 half dime. The better the properties the better the finds. Good luck and thanks for the reply.

Congrats MM!!! What a GREAT FIND!!! HH, Finman (Joe)

Thanks Joe. It's always good to hear from a Hoosier. We've been going up to LaPorte about every month now. Can't wait till that snow is gone!
Say "hello" to John Cougar for me. :headbang:

Nice oldie. Happy for you and your oldest. Enjoy looking at your ceiling. Cool digs...

I was very young at the time, but I remember spending that exact coin at the local convenience trading post. I bought firecrackers and candy with it! Great find!!!

Good news on the beers, because it's after two that the crazy photos start getting taken! :D Keep my number handy. You'll hit 1700s again soon!

COIN-gratz,

Buck

excellent find sir!! i recently found my first spanish coin and the people on the forum really know how to make you feel like you are on top of the world.

keep up the good work, and keep swingin'

what no dress.........you got to celebrate better than that...lol.........nice find

Its a lucky coin, it was made the same year as the Marine Corps. To my fellow Marine Semper Fi.

My very same thoughts when I saw the date. Semper Fi!

Gongrats on a great find. I can't even make it into the 1800's. Closest is a 1905 Indian Head. I am still pretty new at this though so time is on my side.
