A little history on my property. The home was built in 1890 and so yesterday i decided that i would metal detect and I did find a clad penny that was 8 inches down. They must have brought in alot of fill dirt over the years. I got bored with detecting the yard so I went inside the pole barn out back that was built the same year as the house. 2/3 of the floor is dirt and previous owners did pour concrete on 1/3. as I was detecting I got a large outline of a signal showing quarter and gold, bouncing back and forth. I dug down 12 inches and I would say the width and length I dug was approx 16in x 18in. I hit something hard and metally sounding and it sounded hollow. It scared me because I thought maybe a gas line. I called a friend to help me get the rest of the dirt out of the hole. We got down and it was round lid with 2 hooks on it and very heavy to lift off. It was dark in the barn so i ran inside and grabbed a flashlight, (cheapy) did little good. When we pryed the lid off their is a metal container (round). It was empty except for 3 pieces of old boards in it. It was not a septic tank. My questions are: Could it be an old Moonshine Still buried in the ground or maybe it was used to burn something, maybe a blacksmith shop a long time ago? The old neighbors tell me that years ago the story on the house is that there was a dumb waiter going down into the basement and that is where the old man used to take his hooch up and down from the basement. I am going to dig the metal container completely out of the ground and metal detect underneith it. Let me tell you that when I seen a big lid my heart actually skipped a beat thinking "Oh my God, I actually found a Cache". Guess I will keep digging. Here are the pics, sorry they are so dark.

Was curious if you found out any more info on the mystery you have dug up?
As well, the pics of the crock pieces or if you have found anything more?

I have enjoyed reading this thread, feel you have quite an adventure going on right there in your own back yard ( or barn )!
