A little history on my property. The home was built in 1890 and so yesterday i decided that i would metal detect and I did find a clad penny that was 8 inches down. They must have brought in alot of fill dirt over the years. I got bored with detecting the yard so I went inside the pole barn out back that was built the same year as the house. 2/3 of the floor is dirt and previous owners did pour concrete on 1/3. as I was detecting I got a large outline of a signal showing quarter and gold, bouncing back and forth. I dug down 12 inches and I would say the width and length I dug was approx 16in x 18in. I hit something hard and metally sounding and it sounded hollow. It scared me because I thought maybe a gas line. I called a friend to help me get the rest of the dirt out of the hole. We got down and it was round lid with 2 hooks on it and very heavy to lift off. It was dark in the barn so i ran inside and grabbed a flashlight, (cheapy) did little good. When we pryed the lid off their is a metal container (round). It was empty except for 3 pieces of old boards in it. It was not a septic tank. My questions are: Could it be an old Moonshine Still buried in the ground or maybe it was used to burn something, maybe a blacksmith shop a long time ago? The old neighbors tell me that years ago the story on the house is that there was a dumb waiter going down into the basement and that is where the old man used to take his hooch up and down from the basement. I am going to dig the metal container completely out of the ground and metal detect underneith it. Let me tell you that when I seen a big lid my heart actually skipped a beat thinking "Oh my God, I actually found a Cache". Guess I will keep digging. Here are the pics, sorry they are so dark.

Re: dug a hole and look what I found

I think I might have fainted if I dug up that lid!!!!!!!!!! Talk about a great cache site. So let me see... you buy this property and it JUST HAPPENS to be an old moonshiners place. Was that part of the sales pitch? Did you know about this before you bought it?

Looks like you made a good choice. Maybe you should get into real estate.....

This house was on the market on the main street for sale for well over a year. I never heard any stories about it until I purchased it to put my business in it. All of the old timers started coming in my shop telling me all about the history. Plus I spent time at the library looking for information. I tell you what though, when I seen it was a lid of some kind I was afraid to open it and afraid not to open it. For a split second I thought of a stashed dead body, septic tank full of yucky, a hole full of rats or snakes, yes it caught me off guard for sure. Mary ann

I am going to go out there this evening when I get off of work. I got a good signal right beside where I was digging the first hole so I will dig there and see if anything is next to it. Mary ann

Strange with the wood inside. hmmmm. :icon_scratch: Are you sure that it is not an old iron sewage pipe? Can u touch the bottom? Maybe its an old clean-out? Any threads on top? Could there be a 90 degree bend at the bottom? Just thinking. (or trying to lol)

Re: dug a hole and look what I found

We got rain yesterday when I got off of work so I decided to come on home. I would be digging in the barn so I won't get wet, that is not the problem. If it is overcast I can't see very well in the barn to dig (Poor lighting unless it is sunny outside). The barrel has a metal bottom that I hit hard with my shovel and it went all of the way through the bottom, I guess it is pretty rusted. There is no other outlets on the barrel. Also no threads on the top. The lid just sits on the top of the barrel. Mary ann

Very interesting story. I hope you find some goodies. I have heard of people hiding bills in old paint cans. Check any more paint cans if you find them lying around. Good luck.

I would check every signal in the barn just to be on the safe side. This is a very awesome find indeed. Please let us know what you find. I wish I lived closer to help find the treasure. I would also talk to the older members of the community to see if they can shed some light on this property as well.

That is a very cool find! It must have been exciting. Someone probably used it for their bank. So money came and went often.

Re: dug a hole and look what I found

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back with everybody. I get off of work at 6pm and it is to dark in the barn to dig. I got out early this morning to check a signal beside the one I just dug and guess what, I found another one right beside the other one. :BangHead: :BangHead: All that digging for another empty barrel with a lid on it. Guess I will keep digging and hope that someone forgot to clean the money out of one. Here are the pictures from this mornings dig. I did not have anybody to help me get the lid off this morning so I just used a shovel to raise it up alittle bit to peek in with a flashlight and there is 3 little pieces of wood at the bottom again. Re: dug a hole and look what I found

I think they may be for food... maybe a survival stash. Why would someone need two safes for money? Very interesting though.

Re: dug a hole and look what I found

The lids are so heavy, I can't see why someone would use such a heavy lid for food storage. A normal woman would not beable to lift the lid off with a shovel. It was not used for water because the barrels are rusty metal. kinda leaning towards something to hide that only a man could lift the lid off. Guns, Ammo or Liquor. They went to alot of trouble to bury them. I will detect later when I get off at 4pm and see if I can find another one. :dontknow: Mary ann

OK I didnt realize how large and heavy they are. What is the diameter of the lid? Was the wood flat in the bottom?

You may find a note in the bottom of the next one that says "too late sucker" :D :D
....interesting. :)

Re: dug a hole and look what I found

Maybe they were the hiding spots for the moonshine so the law couldn't find it until they took it and sold it. Keep up the good work hopefully you'll find thier stash somewhere. :)

Re: dug a hole and look what I found

Are there any olive trees on the property? You may have found the containers where they were cured.

Nope no money, If there had of been I might say that I found alittle bit and not tell the whole truth. I would not be spending all of that sweaty work digging big holes to show nothing. Ha Ha. The boards were laying flat on the bottom. About the olive trees, There are no olive trees here now but may have been at one time. Do olive trees grow in the states? I am still leaning towards a stash of something for a man. mary ann

Mary Ann, I'd be digging my heart out too. Best of luck to you, I hope it's as fun for you as it is for us. Keep digging, maybe just maybe? :icon_thumleft:

Re: dug a hole and look what I found

Yes Olive trees grow in the states.

Got lots of groves in California.

Maybe time to call in a local historian as to what the barrels where used for.
