don't have a clue-need help

A friend of mine found this last week and asked if I know what it is.I said that I didn't but I definitely know where to find out-right here on TN.This thing is about 4 inches long.It has solder spots on the inside hole like something else was there.I don't know how old the site is where he found it.Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: don't have a clue-need help

I sorta looks like a face frame to an old mantel clock.

Arts and Crafts style trunk lock escutcheon.

Isn't it pretty heavy for that? And what would the screw hole and turned in end on the left have been for?
Just curious .. Thanks

Hmm, I didn't notice the hole on the left. That was my W.A.G., I didn't say I was right!

I wasn't trying to dispute you.. just trying to learn something. :hello:

Four inches tall would make that clock face awfully small for a mantel clock. Don't ya' think? That would make the clock face about 1 and 1/2 inches in diameter.

...ooooooonooooo.. shhh ...(whispering) .. hey all ... I am peaking out of the keyhole from the dark, cold depths of Granny's old Arts and Crafts style (Eastlake specifically) trunk, searching for a clue as to what happened to the heavy duty cast lock escutcheon that once surrounded the very keyhole I am looking through ..ah hah .. wait .. over on the table .. shhhh.. what do I see??? :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow:

Re: don't have a clue-need help

I think creskol is on the right track. It looks to me as tho there may have been some inlay of paste type gems in some areas, like around the small slot. Maybe it was similar to a locket with someone's face in it.
4"x2" seems kinda large for a necklace but I'm kinda leaning that way.

Kinda what I'm thinking.

Well definitely Eastlake. The heavy coat of paint makes me think architectural hardware.

Looks like a drawer lock face to me.. The knob to open it went trough the large hole and when the drawer was closed, and the slot was part of a hasp so it could be locked..

Is it possible this could be something along the lines of a fancy Eastlake-style doorknob or doorbell escutcheon?
