Hello.
Some of you may be trying to find some new MDing spots, or may want to detect a private property rather than parks, tot lots, etc.
I'm sure a lot of you have heard of, or visited, the Craigslist site at: WWW.CRAIGSLIST.COM .
On that site you can buy, sell, and list ads for FREE in your area (state & city).
I came up with the following ad to try to find myself some old properties to hunt. I put the ad on last night, and by this morning I already had two replies. Two eager property owners WANTING me to detect their places.
How easy was that!!!
Anyways, I thought some of you may want to give it a try. You have nothing to lose. Feel free to use my ad & just modify it as needed.
Good luck,
MM

Here are my two replies and my ad:

Hi Doug, We have land! Our family farm has loads of room for metal detecting. We have torn down 3 old houses & barns in the last 10 years. Our farm has been in my direct family line for 125+++ years. The houses were built by my Great Granddaddy as Sharecropper homes. I can only remember one that people lived in until the mid 1970's.
There should be lots of farm things to find..
Not sure what you might find but it would be fun to look. All the farm is now cattle pastures.

I live in Wake County and have a house that was built in early 1900 over four acres.
I'm interested in seeing what we can find.
Please reply.
Thanks

MY AD:
My friend and I are both members of a metal detecting club, and love to hunt for old relics, coins, etc. Not for profit, just for the excitement of digging up pieces of history.
We are currently looking for a few more places to detect. Mainly older homes and properties built before the 1950’s, or land that used to have a house or other activity on it.
We are both adults with years of experience in the metal detecting hobby, and will respect your property if allowed to detect on it. We only dig small holes (approx 3”) to retrieve the item and then refill the holes.
Some of our finds include: Civil War relics, coins, jewelry, old bottles, toys, trade tokens, dog tags, lost items, etc.

If you have an old property, farm, or land that you wouldn't mind us detecting on, please give me a call. You would be surprised what is buried in the dirt that you don't even know is there.
We are more than happy to split whatever we find too.
Thank you,
Doug

I may have to sign divorce papers. Because, Miner, I think I'm in love with you.

I have never heard of "craigslist", but as of now, I am an avid supporter !!

Doug,
Under what sections did you make that post for? I was thinking possibly Skilled Services --> Skilled Trade Services?? I'm not sure where would be the appropriate place to post it on there? I tip my hat to you though, it's a novel idea! Good way to think on your toes!!!

Once you find your state, then click on your nearest city. When you get to that page, in the upper left side look for "POST TO CLASSIFIEDS". Next, click on "FOR SALE / WANTED". Then scroll down to "ITEMS WANTED". Post your ad there.
As far as title (topic), I put "Wanted: Houses and/or properties to metal detect".
The rest is self-explanitory. Once you go through the steps you will receive an e-mail from Craiglist as a verification. Open that link to your post, and click "PUBLISH". You are good to go. Save that e-mail in case you need to edit your ad or cancel it.
Good luck & HH,
MM

I'll run like hell!!! ;D
They can keep all the clad & wheat pennies, unless it's a 1916D of course. ;D
Actually, I'm too honest for my own good. They would get an equal value believe me.
As you know, I currently hunt that old farm that I have posted a ton of finds from. I've offered the owner my finds numerous times, but he's not interested in any of it. He didn't even want the old tag I found that was his great-grandfathers. I thought that was a bit weird, but I guess when you're sitting on 194 acres worth over $20 million dollars, my finds seem trivial. ??? ;)

As long as I don't have an owner hovering over me all day like a hawk, I'll be happy. ;D
Give it a try. There may be a property owner in your area just as curious.

i believe i will try it. what have i got to lose? thanks again.

MM,
And I thought I was the clever one! I've been securing MD sites for some time now using Craigslist. However, my approach has been far less direct. I rehab/rent homes for a living, and frequently use CL for supplies, appliances, etc. Several times now, I've landed yards from people I've bought items from. In fact, I actually fine tune my searches to specifically hook up with sellers who live in the older parts of town, given the chance.
My hat is off to you......
Regards,
Jules
Now stop giving away the great idea!! :) :)

Well, I made my first post on there... we'll see what comes of it. I think I posted it in the wrong section, but I'll repost it under the same section you posted to because I think it'll be better suited there. Thanks again for the great advice!!

Excellent idea. Wish I would have thought of that one. Congrats! I intend to post a similar classified post on craigs list!

Another pure evil genius idea! Right after that "Magic Tot Lot, throw in all coins and make a wish sign." I love this site. And I think I'll add an ad about finding lost rings, etc. in the services section.

HH.

MM,after seeing all your killer finds, and talking to you about them,I just have one request. Can I come to your house and MD it ;D
I'll even tie the mules down wind from you. ;D

Great idea! Thank you so much.

That is an excellent Idea MM. Thanks for sharing.
