I was wondering if you guys and gals conceal carry (with a permit of course) while you are detecting? I am planning on hunting some wooded areas where bears are common, and I was thinking of carrying while going there for my safety. There are a plethora of other reasons to carry but I just wanted to see what the general consensus was and why? Thanks in advance.

I dont need a gun, lol. If you ever see me you will understand why. First of all, I would have to figure out just what type of gun I would carry. Then I have to figure out what ammo to put in it. Then I would want a back up and have to do the same process. In the process of remembering to check for my gun before I leave a site, I would loose my eye glasses lol. Then I would be setting off my detector as I usually dont detect flat ground. I would set on it or get the seat belt stuck in it when getting in and out of the truck. Then by the time I took to pull it, take off the safety, aim, and squeeze the trigger I could have just walked away. I have had the two legged varmits get nosey before and if they can out climb me they can have me. No one has has had me yet. Snakes, bears, mountain lions, well seen plenty. Short of stepping on a snake, never in 35 years been bothered. As the temps near 100+ degrees here in the summer, the weapon would get very hot and add to my misery. Even the added weight of 2 pounds makes a difference when climbing vertical surfaces, which I climb as high as I can to get at the good stuff. I didnt buy a light detector so I can add a gun to my weight. If it dont dig, detect, or hold samples it better be Jerky or water. I would consider one in the truck just in case as you do have some nutty people out there. but I really really would never feel right about shooting a person. I have seen what the business end of a gun does, and its a sight I wish I didnt have to live with. A cop may be too heavy to carry, but my Cell Phone isnt, and its best to just get the info to the police or ranger and let them handle it. It also goes back to being aware of your surroundings. I never did understand shooting anything you didnt plan to eat. Hamburger is $2.00 bucks a pound so its too much work and expense, to buy the license, permits, tags, and then pay for the camping trip just to eat wild meat. I can think of a lot of folks who dont carry guns. I personally donmt believe they should be allowed in the city limits, or public areas. I am more afraid of a concealed carry guy having a sugar fit and shooting me than a snake biting me in the desert. Second amendment has nothing to do with it. I say carry six or seven guns if it makes you happy, dont shoot yourself in the foot.

Well said....much better than I could have:)

I was hoping for like minded folks to respond to my post above. Guess we have bored cabin fever folks playing with their guns in their man caves. Just don't do the Deer Hunter thing, spring is coming guys.

Still no backup on the education thing huh? Don't worry I'll wait.

Fly man - if you read my post, I said I misspoke, I was short sided, and demeaning...LoL...what do you want from me. Obviously I hit some raw nerves, and I am sorry....I don't think there is much more I can do for you.

Peace brother!

Im an old man, too old. You learn a few things.

Nose picker you're most definitely right on that one. Casca, you did state your opinions respectfully like most here do. Do I agree with you on all of it, no of course not but I don't feel you offended anyone, really. Only thing I'd reply is this, I'd bet what little money I have that if you were to ever have a problem with some A hole pulling a gun on you or robbing you or shooting, whatever the case may be, I'd be pretty darn confident that it was not a fellow American whom is permitted and legally allowed to carry said weapon. People that you need to be afraid of are the criminals, and guess what, this country does its best to not let those people own guns. Now, unfortunately guns get in the wrong hands, I understand that. It's a horrible thing and I think mental health is a serious issue that isn't being addressed properly. But, in any case, I still don't understand the fear of good people legally owning guns. They aren't the ones you have to worry about. Ps. I actually agree with you on hunting. I used to hunt with buddies and I just totally lost interest. Now I have no desire to kill an animal to eat it, let alone just to kill it (yet many do). My friends still hunt and they love it and I understand it. It's just not for me. And while I'm definitely not a fan of obama, bush was no dang good either. Just sayin, not everyone's full right or left.

Well, the guns and man caves thing is silly. Look, people like their guns, some don't. That's fine, lets just not set out to offend anyone. That's all.

You said you mis spoke but it was apparent to me that it was not in relation to the sub high school ed comment. So I thought you still believed that. And I don't want anything from you other than for you to stop posting falsehoods like that on the Internet. Too many people get online and believe whatever they read.

So we are cool!

Thanks, I appreciate your comments and understand.

I have carried for almost a decade now. I've never had to use my weapon. But here's a little story. I lived in ferndale Michigan for a couple of years. My two young daughters and I would go to this dollar store that they liked because of the toys and school supplies. We went there on a Thursday evening around 7-8 o'clockish. Every thing was fine. Like always the the one of the owners was there. A husband and a father. I've met his wife and one of his daughters that worked there. My daughters finally made their choices of what they had to have. lol . We payed the nice guy for the items. Talked a little as usual. Well have a good night I said. The next evening I decided to go pick up some food for dinner. As I drove by I noticed police there. The guy that would talk to you even help you out if you needed something but didn't have the cash. A low life p.o.s. had shot and killed him. Over the little bit of money he and his family was making running a small dollar store. A stone throw away from Detroit. Go figure. I've lived in this area for most of my life. I care about people too. But the animals who do things of this nature are the reason why good people carry. I would never let a low life take me away from my family. And this is not stereo typing on my part. I've watched my neighborhood fall apart. People who don't believe this , walk down john r road from 8 mile to 6 mile and see if you come back with the same "people don't need guns" attitude

Political posts on a metal detecting forum?
We are talking about "conceal carry while detecting"
Yes the thread is starting to stray from said topic, but if you read the entire thread I am sure you will see why...
Anyways welcome to the forum Gary52

I carry 24/7...I'm never without. Although, trying to find a good carry position while detecting is proving to be difficult.

This bickering stops now. You guys are taking the original posters off topic and using it for your own agendas . Read the title of the thread and reply if you wish but it is not going to go political. If you wish to have a personal conversation do it in a PM. If this cranks up again and vacations will be granted.
Thank you.

I agree!

Detect....recover....repeat!

Carry or not, is a personal choice.

I will be taking the conceal carry course this spring, after that I will carry at all times. Detecting or just going for a walk. When something happens you don't have time to go to the truck to get your weapon or even make a cell phone call.
