Dishonest

The early trail cameras i had took film also. On the first picture taken was of a sign i made. It said if the person getting this film processed was not my name please call me and let me know. I had also put my phone number on it. I remember getting 2 cameras back that way

Was it private property? Be interesting to know if there are any laws around finding something on public land and taking it.
Think about that for a minute.
Starting with your vehicle.
Which is probably already violating regulations if you run over a blade of grass or a weed.

Cameras have been regulated off limits in isolated cases.
Elsewhere the common use of them and lack of enforcement potential leaves their use common.
As such they are the lawful property of those who own them. Not those who possess them.

If it isn't yours , leave it alone.
Yes it would be considerate to set someone's sugar bowl in sight of where they left it but in a dry spot IF it is raining out or something like that.
But just because someone placed a camera does not make it fair game to sticky fingers!

Finding?
We have laws where I hunt regarding tree stands. That does not make one being legally used your property because you "found " it.
Oh they have been stolen. Including one of mine.
Another an associate found one of his a couple hundred yards away from where he had placed it with someone in it stating if it was on public land anyone could use it. He was far nicer than I would have been about it if the thief was still in it when I returned with a chainsaw. (Yes cutting live trees on public land is illegal here. I'd have cheerfully reimbursed the state for it)

I am not saying you should take anything. I am wondering if there are laws around it. I always figured if my cameras where stolen its on me for leaving them on public land.

No.
Stealing a camera is stealing a camera.
You park a car , is it fair game if you leave it unattended expecting to return to it?

IF time or use regulations state a camera is considered trash then you might have an argument. tree stands need removed by a certain date here I live. Of course that leads to the question of if they are fair game after.( Depends who you ask.)
And as soon as you say they are it is almost a sure thing someone will steal a legal stand...

Stealing the cards out of cameras is not uncommon here by trespassers not wanting to be identified.
More theft resistant metal boxes are one result. So is using a ladder to set them higher.

The current top grade cameras are linked to cellphones for real time picture captures.
An offer of faster response to trespassing ect..

Smart to have a camera at a camera. I run about 5 of the Spypoints cellulars and two brownings. The brownings are terrible..
Good deals out there now days. I think cuddeback has a sale going on for 10 cameras.
People are using them for home protection also with crooks using wi-fi jammers on security systems.

Lets say you find a camera and the battery is dead. You check it again after a week then a month then a year then two years and the battery is still dead. With no signs of being used/checked. Can you take it then? What is the cutoff?
:boxing:😜

Lets say I use a bait camera in an area camera thefts have been an issue?
I get a picture of you taking it and then what?
(I been running them on my private. So it's not a camera issue as much as a trespassing issue.)

For the cost , I'd be reluctant to let a camera rot. But that's only my opinion.

I meant camtrak not camtark

I’ve used cameras extensively for hunting. Mostly in very remote areas where basically your only picture of non-wildlife would be maybe another hunter. So I’ll get pics of the very occasional hunter creeping by, but I’ve never had a cam stolen. I do make a good effort to hide my cameras. Someone with a good eye for the forest can spot them pretty easily if they’re not brushed in or hidden in some regard. I have had a bear get one of mine off a tree but not a person! I would put 4 out at a time and check them weekly. Once I found a small handwritten note inside one of my cams I had hidden pretty good on a dark timbered waterhole a long ways from anywhere, couple miles off trail way back in the deadfall. It said “Don’t mess with my stuff and I won’t mess with yours”. Had me looking over my shoulder the whole rest of the day! There were no pictures of anyone or whoever it was when I checked the card later. Sorry for the thread hijack!….

When cams were just starting to gain popular traction a friend nabbed a carrot off a bait pile for a snack before spotting the camera.
He met the owner on his way out and they had a (fortunate) laugh over it.
